CPI Practice Test

The Certified Postsecondary Instructor (CPI) credential from the National Center for Competency Testing is aimed at people who teach beyond high school. What the CPI is and how it works

According to National Center for Competency Testing, “The CPI® exam has 200 multiple-choice questions that test your knowledge, skills, and abilities in the remaining general competencies (#2-5) and you are allowed four (4) hours to complete the exam, although few people require that much time.”^[1]

The CPI is offered by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) to show that an instructor understands how to teach at the postsecondary level. The exam has 200 multiple-choice questions, and you are allowed 4 hours to finish. NCCT reports scores on a scale of 200-720, and every pass point is scaled to 575. Results are provided immediately after the exam, and you can see them by logging in to your personal account on the NCCT website.

To apply, you need 6 months of full-time postsecondary teaching experience (or equivalent), a high school diploma or GED, and a reference form. Applications must reach NCCT at least 14 days before your requested test date, so do not leave registration until the last moment. The exam fee is $119.

After certification, the credential is active for 1 year and stays valid for 5 years from the issue date. Renewal is annual: $89/year plus 12 CE contact hours.

These are practice questions written for this site, not questions from the real exam. Each explanation shows why the right answer is right and why the others are wrong.

Example 1

Question: What is the primary purpose of a professional code of ethics for postsecondary instructors?

How to use these practice tests

Start with the official material. Read the NCCT content outline and the Candidate Handbook so you know what each content area covers and how the exam is run. Then take one practice set from each area in the table above, untimed, and write down every question you miss along with the reason you missed it: a gap in knowledge, a misread stem, or a choice between two plausible options.

Next, spend your study time on the weakest area. Reread your notes, then retake that set a few days later and compare results. For topics that cut across areas, such as ethics, online teaching and inclusive instruction, use the matching topic sets after your main areas feel steady.

As test day approaches, practise sustained focus. The exam is long, so work through several sets in one sitting and keep an eye on pacing instead of dwelling on a single hard item. Review the explanations for correct answers as well, because a lucky guess does not show understanding.

In the final days, avoid learning new topics. Revisit your error notes, confirm your registration details with NCCT, and rest.
