What the CET is and how it works

According to International Society for Experiential Professionals, “A Certified Experiential Specialist is any professional bringing experiential methodology to the work they do. This credential is open to any person, in any field.”^[2]

The International Society for Experiential Professionals (ISEP) certifies people who use experiential methodology in their work. Its certification page says the credential is open to any person, in any field, and that training and supervision must be ISEP-approved.

Requirements depend on the level. Certified Experiential Specialist level CES1 asks for 40 hours of experiential training and 10 hours of supervision, including 2 hours of individual supervision. CES2 asks for 150 training hours and 50 hours of supervision, including 8 individual hours. CES3 asks for 250 training hours and 100 hours of supervision, including 8 individual hours.

The therapist track, CET1 (Certified Experiential Therapist), requires a bachelor's degree in a mental health-related field, 90 training hours and 10 hours of supervision, including 2 individual hours. Check which title and level you are aiming for before you plan your hours.

ISEP lists its membership at $197 per year.

Worked examples: how to reason through CET questions

These are practice questions written for this site, not questions from the real exam. Each explanation shows why the right answer is right and why the others are wrong.

Example 1

Question: How does environment impact immersive program effectiveness?

"It adds unnecessary cost" is wrong because it treats the environment as an extra, when it is part of the design.

Rule to remember: environment is an active ingredient of an experiential program, and it can work in either direction.

Example 2

Question: Why is storytelling effective in experiential engagement?

4. They connect experiences to relatable outcomes

"They encourage memorization only" is wrong because the point is understanding and application, not rote recall.

Rule to remember: in experiential work, narrative links the activity to meaning. When an option says a tool harms thinking or only helps memory, be suspicious.

"It creates confusion" is wrong because clear confidentiality agreements reduce uncertainty about what happens to personal information. "It complicates session design" is wrong because it is a basic ground rule that supports the design instead of burdening it.

Rule to remember: psychological safety comes first in group work. Options that put participant privacy at risk are almost never correct.

How to use these practice tests

Start with the official ISEP certification page and write down the level you are aiming for and the training and supervision it needs. Our practice sets test knowledge, not hours, so keep your own record of approved training and supervision separately.

Then take a short quiz on each topic, starting with Experiential Learning Models and Facilitation, Risk Management and Ethical Practices and Client Engagement and Immersive Program Design. For every miss, read the explanation and write the general rule in your own words. Do not just memorise the answer letter.

Next, work through the business-side sets, such as Leadership and Team Management and Project Management and Execution. Return to the topics where you missed the most questions and retake them after a day or two, so you are checking recall instead of recognition.

Before test day, use the main practice test as a mixed run. Our questions are written by us and are not real exam questions, so use them to find weak areas and rely on ISEP for the official requirements.
