The Certified Consulting Meteorologist (CCM) credential is awarded by the American Meteorological Society to meteorologists who consult for clients. What the CCM is and how it works

According to American Meteorological Society, “The oral portion of the examination is normally conducted through a virtual testing process. Commonly the full Board participates, but a panel of at least 3 Board members is required.”^[1]

The CCM is a professional certification from the American Meteorological Society (AMS) for meteorologists who work as consultants. AMS describes a process with a written exam, a consulting essay and an oral exam. The oral portion is normally conducted through a virtual testing process. Fees published by AMS:

• Application: $330 for AMS members, $660 for non-members.
• Reapplication: $100 for AMS members, $200 for non-members.
• Renewal: $138/year for AMS members, $530/year for non-members.

Certification is for a period of 1 year and can be renewed annually.

Retake rules depend on which part you did not pass. If you do not pass the written exam, you can reapply starting 1 year after the date of denial. If you pass the written exam but fail your first oral attempt, you can retake the oral exam without redoing the written exam and consulting essay. That oral retake is only open between 3 and 6 months after denial, and a full reapplication is needed after 6 months. If you fail more than once, there is a 2-year wait.

Worked examples: how to reason through CCM questions

These are practice questions written for this site, not questions from the real exam. Each explanation shows why the right answer is right and why the others are wrong.

Example 1

Question: A forensic meteorologist must determine whether a flood was a '100-year event.' The most technically correct interpretation of a 100-year flood is:

1. A flood that occurs exactly once per century
2. A flood level with a 1% annual exceedance probability
3. The largest flood ever recorded at that location
4. A flood caused by 100 hours of continuous rainfall

Rule to remember: return-period language is shorthand for annual exceedance probability. In a forensic report, state the probability and not the number of years.

Rule to remember: when a question asks why a recurring client check-in exists, choose the answer about the client's needs and progress, not the consultant's revenue or targets.

Example 3

Question: Which CRM automation is most beneficial when a consulting meteorologist receives a new case involving a specific weather event date?

How to use these practice tests

Start by reading the AMS CCM program page and its full procedures document, so you know what each stage asks of you and which retake rules apply. Note any point that is unclear and check it with AMS directly.

Then take one of our practice sets in each area, starting with the area you work in least. The sets on applied and forensic meteorology, atmospheric science, forecasting and instrumentation test the technical side. The sets on business management, client relationships, needs assessment, negotiation, ethics and witness testimony test the consulting side. Treat these as practice questions written by us, not real exam questions.

After each set, read every explanation, including those for questions you got right. Write down the general rule behind each miss, such as how a probability is defined or why a review exists, and group your notes by topic. Retake a set only after you have reviewed those notes, so you measure understanding and not memory of the answers.

Because the oral exam is held in front of a Board panel, practise explaining your answers aloud as you would to a client or a court. Spend the last stretch before your date rereading your notes and the official procedures, not starting new material.
