What the CCT is and how it works

According to American Association of Healthcare Administrative Management, “All areas of the CCT exam are graded together and the exam must be passed with a score of 70% or greater in order to earn the designation.”^[1]

The CCT is an online proctored exam that measures basic competencies in healthcare compliance. It is run by the American Association of Healthcare Administrative Management (AAHAM). The time limit is 90 minutes, and all areas of the exam are graded together. You need 70% or greater to earn the designation. Grading is immediate when you finish, so you see your result right away.

Delivery. You can test remotely through ProctorU, which charges a nominal fee for its service, or with a proctor at your facility for in-person testing. Exams are offered on weekdays throughout the year and on the second Saturday of each month.

Eligibility and cost. The exam is available to anyone involved in the management of patient accounts that involve government payers and compliance. AAHAM membership is not required, although it is encouraged, and 1 year of compliance experience is recommended. The exam fee is $100.

Deadlines. Applications are due at least 30 days before the scheduled exam date. If you choose a date fewer than 30 days away, an additional rush fee applies.

Retakes and validity. A failed exam can be retaken as soon as 30 days after the original exam date, and you retake the full exam. The designation is kept by retaking and passing the entire exam every 3 years.

Vendor contracts are business documents that say nothing about whether staff learned anything.

The rule to remember: effectiveness records answer three questions. Who attended, what was covered, and how was understanding measured. If an option does not help answer one of those, it is probably a distractor.

The rule to remember: tie each agency to its core job. Money and sanctions point to Treasury, prosecution points to Justice, export licensing points to Commerce, and border and security point to Homeland Security.

The Stark Law restricts physician referrals to entities with which the physician has a financial relationship, so it concerns referrals, not privacy. The Anti-Kickback Statute prohibits payments made to induce or reward referrals for federally paid care, which is also unrelated to patient privacy. The False Claims Act covers knowingly submitting false claims to the government and does not set privacy training duties.

The rule to remember: match the law to the harm it addresses. Privacy of patient information points to HIPAA, referral and payment arrangements point to Stark and Anti-Kickback, and false billing points to the False Claims Act.
