CCF Floral Mechanics & Construction Flashcards

What is the correct technique for applying floral tape to a wired stem?

Answer: Stretch the tape while wrapping at a 45-degree downward angle as you rotate the stem

Stretching floral tape activates its self-sealing adhesive, and the diagonal angle produces a smooth, tight wrap that fully covers the wire.

What glue gun temperature setting is recommended when attaching delicate flower petals in corsage construction?

Answer: Low temperature

A low-temperature glue gun prevents heat damage and scorching of delicate petals and foliage used in corsages.

In floral design, an 'armature' refers to:

Answer: A structural framework that supports or shapes an arrangement's form

An armature is a skeletal support structure — often made from wire, branches, or mesh — that defines and holds the shape of a design.

What is chicken wire most commonly used for in professional floral mechanics?

Answer: Creating a stem-support grid inside a container in place of or over floral foam

Crumpled chicken wire inside a container creates a natural interlocking grid that holds stems at varied angles without foam.

When constructing a wearable corsage, which consideration is most critical for the wearer's comfort?

Answer: Keeping the total weight of the corsage as light as possible

Excessive weight causes a corsage to sag, pull on fabric, and become uncomfortable throughout an event.

Which floral adhesive is most commonly used in professional cold-process corsage construction to avoid heat damage?

Answer: Floral cold glue (Oasis cold glue)

Floral cold glue bonds flowers and foliage quickly without heat, preventing the wilting and scorching that high-temperature adhesives cause.
