CCF Practice Test

The California Certified Florist credential is awarded by the California State Floral Association, and candidates apply on their own or through an employer. This page gives you free practice sets sorted by content area, worked answers, a study plan and the exam facts that matter, with the official source named for anything that can change.

What changed for CCF in 2026

What the CCF is and how it works

According to California State Floral Association, “The test takes all day and you may be asked to create up to five floral designs.”^[1]

The CCF exam is run by the California State Floral Association and tests floral design skill and plant knowledge. Candidates may apply independently or be sponsored by an employer.

The exam has a hands-on part and a written part. The hands-on exam is held in person at Cal Expo in Sacramento on Friday, November 6, 2026, from 7:30 am to 1:00 pm. The official FAQ says the test takes all day and you may be asked to create up to 5 floral designs. The written exam is online, on Wednesday, November 11, 2026 and Wednesday, November 18, 2026, from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. It includes a flower identification section. From slide images you write the common name of each flower and select the correct botanical name from a list. You receive a list of 100 flower and plant names at registration, and 50 of them are used in the test.

Registration is $435 for CSFA members and $535 for non-members during early registration. After 10/15/26 the rates are $475 for members and $575 for non-members. A retake costs $100 per component. Results are sent by mail, often 3-5 weeks after the exam. Annual CSFA/CCF dues are required to stay in good standing and keep the credential.

Worked examples: how to reason through CCF questions

These are practice questions written for this site, not questions from the real exam. Each explanation shows why the right answer is right and why the others are wrong.

Example 1

Question: What is the principle that guides the flow and movement of the viewer's eye in an arrangement?

1. Focal Point
2. Rhythm
3. Contrast
4. Emphasis

Answer: B. Rhythm

Explanation:

Rhythm is correct. It is the principle that moves the viewer's eye through an arrangement, usually by repeating a color, form, line or texture, or by changing size or spacing gradually. Focal point is wrong because it describes where the eye lands and rests, not how it travels. Contrast is wrong because it uses differences to create interest or separation, which does not by itself guide movement. Emphasis is wrong because it makes one area stand out, which is close to a focal point. The rule to remember: if the wording is about flow, movement or the path the eye follows, think rhythm. If it is about where attention stops, think focal point or emphasis.

Example 2

Question: Which foam type is appropriate for dried and silk flower arrangements?

1. Dry foam (Sahara foam)
2. Saturated wet floral foam
3. Standard craft Styrofoam
4. No foam — use sand instead

Answer: A. Dry foam (Sahara foam)

Explanation:

Dry foam, often sold as Sahara foam, is correct. It is made to hold the stiff stems of dried and silk materials without crumbling when they are pushed in. Saturated wet floral foam is wrong because it is designed to hold water for fresh stems, and dried or silk stems gain nothing from it. Standard craft Styrofoam is wrong because it is a different product and does not grip stems the way purpose-made dry foam does. Sand is wrong because it gives no secure hold for stems at the angles a design needs. The rule to remember: match the foam to the stems. Fresh material goes in wet foam, and dried or silk material goes in dry foam.

Example 3

Question: What type of floral arrangement is typically attached to the end of ceremony pews or chair backs?

Answer: A. Pew cones, clusters, or pomanders hung from ribbon

Explanation:

Pew cones, clusters or pomanders hung from ribbon is correct. These pieces are made to attach to the end of a pew or the back of a chair, and they mark the aisle while putting flowers at the eye level of seated guests. Low centerpiece arrangements are wrong because they sit on a surface such as a table and have nothing to hang from. Tall topiary standards are wrong because they are freestanding and too heavy and tall to hang from a pew. Flat pressed-flower panels are wrong because they are flat display pieces, not a usual ceremony attachment. The rule to remember: a piece that hangs or clips to furniture must be light, compact and made to be fastened.

How to use these practice tests

Start with the official exam page and registration form so you know the format of each component and the dates that apply to you. Then build your plan around the official content areas.

1. Take the flower and foliage identification set alongside the 100-name list you receive at registration. Make flashcards that pair each common name with its botanical name, and test yourself in both directions.
2. Work through the design principles and techniques set. For every miss, write a sentence on why the correct option fits and why your choice did not.
3. Use the mechanics and construction set and the post-harvest care set to learn which supplies and handling steps suit which situations.
4. For the hands-on exam, practise building designs against the clock using the techniques you reviewed. Time yourself, since the test takes all day.
5. In the final days, repeat only the questions you missed and reread the official outline for any area you have not covered.
