CCC Questions and Answers

What are the requirements to qualify for the CCC?

To qualify for the Certificate of Clinical Competence, you must complete a graduate degree from a CAA-accredited program, finish a minimum of 400 clinical hours during graduate study, pass the Praxis exam in your specialty area, and complete a 36-week Clinical Fellowship under a mentored professional. All requirements are set and verified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

Is the CCC certification mandatory to practice speech-language pathology?

The CCC is not federally mandated, but most employers, hospitals, and school districts require it as a condition of employment. Many state licensure boards also accept or require ASHA certification as proof of competency. Holding the CCC demonstrates that a clinician has met national standards for education, clinical experience, and examination performance in speech-language pathology or audiology.

What is the difference between CCC-SLP and CCC-A credentials?

The CCC-SLP is the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology, while the CCC-A is the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology. Both are awarded by ASHA but cover different scopes of practice. CCC-SLP holders treat speech, language, and swallowing disorders, whereas CCC-A holders specialize in hearing assessment, balance disorders, and hearing aid fitting.

How long does it take to earn the CCC credential?

Most candidates complete the CCC process in approximately six to seven years after high school. This includes a four-year undergraduate degree, a two-year master's program in speech-language pathology or a four-year doctoral program in audiology, and a 36-week Clinical Fellowship. The Praxis examination can be taken during the graduate program or shortly after completion.

What exam do you need to pass for CCC certification?

You must pass the Praxis examination administered by ETS in your specialty area. For speech-language pathology, the exam is the Praxis SLP (test code 5331) with a passing score of 162. For audiology, it is the Praxis Audiology exam (test code 5343) with a passing score of 170. The exam consists of selected-response questions covering clinical knowledge and practice.

How much does it cost to obtain and maintain the CCC?

The ASHA certification application fee is $100 for new applicants. Annual ASHA membership dues, which include certification maintenance, are approximately $225 for certified members. You must also budget for the Praxis exam fee of around $120 and any state licensure fees, which vary by state. Continuing education costs for the required 30 hours per three-year cycle are additional.

What continuing education is required to keep the CCC active?

CCC holders must complete 30 certification maintenance hours every three years to keep their credential active. At least one hour must cover ethics content. Activities can include attending conferences, completing online courses, publishing research, or providing clinical instruction. ASHA tracks compliance through its CE Registry, and failure to meet the requirement can result in certification revocation.

Can you work in medical settings without the CCC credential?

Most hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and skilled nursing facilities require the CCC for employment in speech-language pathology or audiology positions. Medicare regulations specify that SLPs providing services to Medicare beneficiaries must hold the CCC or meet equivalent qualifications. Some states allow Clinical Fellows to practice under supervision before earning the CCC, but independent practice in medical settings typically requires full certification.
