What are the eligibility requirements for the ABO NOCE exam?

The ABO NOCE (National Opticianry Competency Examination) has no formal education prerequisites. Candidates do not need a degree or diploma to sit for the exam, though completing an opticianry program or gaining work experience is strongly recommended. Some states require ABO certification for licensure, so check your state board's specific requirements before registering.

How do I register for the ABO NOCE exam?

Registration is handled through the American Board of Opticianry website at abo-ncle.org. You create an account, complete the application, and pay the exam fee online. Testing is available year-round at Pearson VUE test centers across the United States. Once approved, you can schedule your appointment at any available testing location and date that works for you.

How long is the ABO NOCE exam?

The ABO NOCE exam allows two hours to complete all questions. This gives candidates roughly one minute per question, so time management is important. Most test-takers find the allotted time sufficient if they prepare adequately. You can flag questions and return to them before submitting, so avoid spending too long on any single item during your first pass.

What study materials are recommended for the ABO NOCE?

The most widely used resource is the textbook 'System for Ophthalmic Dispensing' by Brooks and Borish, which covers nearly all exam topics. The ABO also publishes an official study guide and content outline on their website. Practice tests, flashcards, and opticianry review courses from accredited programs are also effective preparation tools for reinforcing key concepts.

Do I need work experience to take the ABO NOCE?

No formal work experience is required to take the ABO NOCE exam. The test is open to anyone who wants to demonstrate competency in opticianry. However, hands-on experience in an optical dispensary significantly improves your understanding of practical topics like frame adjustments, lens measurements, and patient interactions that appear frequently on the exam.

What is the difference between ABO and NCLE certification?

ABO certification covers ophthalmic dispensing, including eyeglass lenses, frames, and fitting. NCLE (National Contact Lens Examiners) certification focuses specifically on contact lens fitting and dispensing. They are separate exams administered by the same organization. Many opticians pursue both credentials to demonstrate full-scope competency, and some states require one or both for licensure.

Can I retake the ABO NOCE if I fail?

Yes, you can retake the ABO NOCE exam if you do not pass. There is a mandatory waiting period before you can reschedule, and you must pay the full exam fee again for each attempt. There is no limit on the number of retakes allowed. The ABO provides a score report that identifies weaker content areas so you can focus your studying before the next attempt.

Which states require ABO certification for opticians?

Over 20 states require some form of licensure or certification for practicing opticians, and many accept or require ABO certification as part of that process. States like New York, Florida, California, and Texas have specific opticianry licensing requirements. Requirements vary significantly by state, so contact your state optician licensing board directly for the most current regulations.
