What the WY Bar is and how it works

According to Wyoming Supreme Court and Wyoming State Board of Law Examiners; exam administered by the Wyoming State Bar, “The MBE consists of 200 multiple-choice questions: 175 scored questions and 25 unscored pretest questions.”[1]

The Wyoming Supreme Court and the Wyoming State Board of Law Examiners set the admission rules. The Wyoming State Bar administers the exam. To sit for the UBE, you must be an adult with a juris doctor degree from an ABA-accredited law school. The MPRE is also an admission prerequisite, and Wyoming requires a scaled score of 85 or greater.

Wyoming currently lists two UBE formats. The Legacy UBE is offered February 23–24, 2027 in Cheyenne. It includes the MBE, which has 200 multiple-choice questions (175 scored and 25 unscored pretest questions) and runs six hours. It also includes six 30-minute MEE essays and two 90-minute MPT performance tasks. A passing Legacy UBE score is a scaled score of 270 or greater. The NextGen UBE is offered July 27–28, 2027 in Laramie. A passing NextGen score is a total score of 620 or greater, and applicants must type it on a personal computer.

The bar application fee rises to $750 effective October 2, 2026. An applicant who has failed a bar examination four times will not be permitted to sit for the UBE in Wyoming, although a discretionary waiver is available. Score notification follows the Board's recommendation and, for applicants with a passing UBE score, the Committee's recommendation. Dates, fees and rules can change, so confirm them with the Wyoming State Bar admissions page and the Wyoming Supreme Court bar admission page before you register.

Worked examples: how to reason through WY Bar questions

These are practice questions written for this site, not questions from the real exam. Each explanation shows why the right answer is right and why the others are wrong.

Example 1

Question: Which provision of the Wyoming Constitution most directly parallels the U.S. Constitution's Fourteenth Amendment due process clause?

  1. Article 1, Section 2 (Equality of all)
  2. Article 1, Section 6 (Due process)
  3. Article 1, Section 11 (Freedom of speech)
  4. Article 1, Section 4 (Security against search)

Answer: B. Article 1, Section 6 (Due process)

Explanation:

The correct answer is Article 1, Section 6. It says no person may be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law, which is the same protection the Fourteenth Amendment gives against state action.

Article 1, Section 2 deals with equality, so it lines up more with equal protection than with due process. Article 1, Section 11 concerns freedom of speech, which is a separate right. Article 1, Section 4 protects against unreasonable searches and seizures, which is a Fourth Amendment parallel.

The rule to remember: when a state constitution copies a federal right, match the clause by what it protects, not by how close it sits to the others in the Declaration of Rights. Read the wording of each option and ask which federal clause it mirrors.

Example 2

Question: Under Wyoming contract law, an anticipatory repudiation occurs when:

  1. A party fails to perform on the due date
  2. A party clearly and unequivocally declares before performance is due that it will not perform
  3. A party requests a modification to the contract
  4. A party assigns its duties to a third party

Answer: B. A party clearly and unequivocally declares before performance is due that it will not perform

Explanation:

The correct answer is that a party clearly and unequivocally declares, before performance is due, that it will not perform. That statement lets the other side treat the contract as breached right away and pursue remedies without waiting for the due date.

Failing to perform on the due date is an ordinary breach, not an anticipatory one, because the time for performance has already arrived. Asking to modify the contract is a negotiation, and it does not unequivocally refuse to perform. Assigning duties to a third party usually does not end the assignor's obligation, so it is not a repudiation by itself.

The rule to remember: repudiation needs a clear refusal made before the performance date. Hesitation, requests and doubts do not meet that standard.

Example 3

Question: Under the Wyoming Rules of Civil Procedure, a defendant must serve an answer to a complaint within how many days after service of the summons?

  1. 14 days
  2. 20 days
  3. 21 days
  4. 30 days

Answer: C. 21 days

Explanation:

The correct answer is 21 days. Wyoming Rule of Civil Procedure 12(a) gives a defendant that long to serve an answer after being served with the summons and complaint.

14 days is too short and does not match the rule's response period. 20 days is a near miss that tempts people who remember an older or different deadline. 30 days is longer than Rule 12(a) allows, although other deadlines in civil procedure can be longer, for example when service is waived or other rules apply.

The rule to remember: tie each response deadline to its specific rule and to the event that starts the clock. Here the clock starts at service of the summons and complaint. When two options look close, check the rule text instead of relying on a general sense of the timing.

How to use these practice tests

Start with the official material. Read the Wyoming admission rules and the Wyoming State Bar admissions page so you know which UBE format you are sitting, what the passing score is, and what the application requires. Our pages summarise these points but do not replace them.

Next, take a practice set in each subject area we cover and treat the results as a map of your weak spots. Begin with Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Contracts and Commercial Law, Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence and Professional Responsibility. After each set, read every explanation, including the ones for questions you got right, and write down the rule behind each miss.

Spend your remaining time on the weakest subjects, then retake those sets. Use the eligibility, scoring, admission by motion and reciprocity sets to check the administrative rules. Practise essays and performance tasks with official NCBE materials, since our sets are multiple choice. In the last days, do timed mixed practice and avoid new topics.
