✍️ Sample WTMA Questions & Answers

1. A worm gear set has a worm with 1 start and a worm wheel with 40 teeth. The gear ratio is:
40:1

Worm gear ratio = worm wheel teeth ÷ worm starts = 40 ÷ 1 = 40:1, meaning the worm turns 40 times for each rotation of the wheel.

2. Two identical balls are dropped from different heights. Ball A is dropped from 10 feet; Ball B from 20 feet. Compare their speeds just before hitting the ground.
Ball B is about 1.4 times faster than Ball A

Speed is proportional to the square root of height (v = √(2gh)), so doubling height increases speed by √2 ≈ 1.4 times.

3. A furnace pipe passes through a wall. To prevent the wall from overheating, you should install:
A thermal insulating collar around the pipe

An insulating collar reduces conduction from the hot pipe to the surrounding wall material.

4. A spur gear train has three gears in a row: A drives B, and B drives C. Gears A and C rotate in:
The same direction

Each gear reverses direction; with three gears (odd number), gears A and C rotate in the same direction.

5. In a simple electrical circuit, if the voltage is doubled and the resistance remains constant, what happens to the current?
It doubles.

According to Ohm's Law (V=IR, or I=V/R), current (I) is directly proportional to voltage (V) and inversely proportional to resistance (R). If the voltage is doubled while resistance stays the same, the current must also double to maintain the relationship.

6. A bicycle rider coasts down a hill and gains speed. Which energy conversion is occurring?
Gravitational potential to kinetic

As the rider descends, gravitational potential energy converts into kinetic energy, increasing speed.
