The Texas barber license written examination is administered through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) and delivered by Pearson VUE. To earn your Texas barber license you must pass both a written knowledge exam and a practical skills exam. The written test covers sanitation, anatomy, bacteriology, tools and implements, hair cutting techniques, chemistry, and Texas-specific licensing law. Download our free Texas barber practice test PDF to study offline and master all tested topics before exam day.

Texas requires 1,500 training hours for a standard barber student license. Cosmetologists seeking a crossover barber license need 300 hours. Regardless of your path, the written exam tests the same core content โ€” and thorough preparation is the key to passing on your first attempt.

What the Texas Barber Written Exam Covers

The TDLR written exam spans seven major subject areas. Understanding each domain gives you a clear study roadmap.

Sanitation and Sterilization

This is consistently the highest-tested area. You must know the difference between chemical disinfection and physical sterilization, how to use EPA-registered disinfectants at the correct dilution ratios, how to maintain wet sanitizers, salon cleaning protocols, and OSHA Universal Precautions for bloodborne pathogen exposure โ€” including what to do if you nick a client.

Anatomy and Physiology

Know the three layers of the skin (epidermis, dermis, hypodermis), the structure of a hair strand (cuticle, cortex, medulla), hair follicle anatomy, the scalp and facial muscles relevant to massage technique, and common scalp and hair conditions including tinea capitis (ringworm), alopecia, and seborrhea.

Bacteriology

Understand the three shapes of bacteria (cocci, bacilli, spirilla), how to distinguish contagious from noncontagious skin conditions, and how to handle parasitic infestations โ€” particularly lice identification and the salon protocols required when a client presents with active lice.

Implements and Tools

Know straight razor maintenance (honing and stropping), clipper adjustment and care, scissor types and proper use, comb and brush selection, and safety rules for all electric tools used in a Texas barbershop.

Hair Cutting and Shaving Techniques

Study sectioning methods, clipper-over-comb, scissor-over-comb, fading, tapering, and blending. For shaving, know both standard and safety razor techniques, as well as mustache and beard trimming procedures.

Chemistry

Understand permanent wave chemistry (oxidation โ€” thio solution breaks disulfide bonds, neutralizer reseals them), chemical relaxers (sodium hydroxide vs. ammonium thioglycolate differences), hair coloring (oxidation dyes, bleach, toners), and the purpose and procedure of a skin patch test for detecting allergic reactions to chemical services.

Texas Licensing Law

Know TDLR hour requirements for each license path, scope of practice for barbers vs. cosmetologists, salon establishment permit requirements, what TDLR inspectors check during a salon inspection, continuing education requirements for license renewal, and the criminal background check disclosure obligation on TDLR applications.

Who administers the Texas barber license exam and where is it taken?

The Texas barber license written exam is administered by Pearson VUE on behalf of the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). You must schedule your exam at an authorized Pearson VUE testing center in Texas. After passing the written exam, you also need to pass a separate practical (hands-on) skills examination before TDLR will issue your license.

What is the difference between disinfection and sterilization on the Texas barber exam?

Disinfection destroys most microorganisms on a surface or implement but does not kill all bacterial spores โ€” it is the standard for salon tools like combs, brushes, and non-invasive implements. Sterilization destroys all microorganisms including spores and is required only for invasive implements that penetrate the skin. On the exam, questions about wet sanitizer use, EPA-registered disinfectants, and proper dilution ratios all fall under the disinfection category, not sterilization.

How many training hours are required for a Texas barber license?

A standard Texas barber student license requires 1,500 training hours at a TDLR-approved barber school. Licensed cosmetologists seeking a crossover barber license are required to complete only 300 additional hours. Both paths lead to the same TDLR barber license and require passing the written and practical exams administered through Pearson VUE.

What does the Texas barber exam ask about permanent wave chemistry?

The Texas barber written exam tests your understanding of the two-step oxidation chemistry behind permanent waves. In Step 1, the thio solution (ammonium thioglycolate) softens and breaks the hair's disulfide bonds, allowing the hair to take the shape of the rods. In Step 2, the neutralizer (typically hydrogen peroxide) re-forms and locks the disulfide bonds in the new curled position. You should also know the difference between thio relaxers and sodium hydroxide (lye) relaxers, and understand why a skin patch test is performed before any chemical service involving color or chemical relaxers.
