The Texas barber license written examination is administered through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) and delivered by Pearson VUE. Texas requires 1,500 training hours for a standard barber student license. Cosmetologists seeking a crossover barber license need 300 hours. Regardless of your path, the written exam tests the same core content — and thorough preparation is the key to passing on your first attempt.

What the Texas Barber Written Exam Covers

The TDLR written exam spans seven major subject areas. Understanding each domain gives you a clear study roadmap.

Sanitation and Sterilization

This is consistently the highest-tested area. You must know the difference between chemical disinfection and physical sterilization, how to use EPA-registered disinfectants at the correct dilution ratios, how to maintain wet sanitizers, salon cleaning protocols, and OSHA Universal Precautions for bloodborne pathogen exposure — including what to do if you nick a client.

Anatomy and Physiology

Know the three layers of the skin (epidermis, dermis, hypodermis), the structure of a hair strand (cuticle, cortex, medulla), hair follicle anatomy, the scalp and facial muscles relevant to massage technique, and common scalp and hair conditions including tinea capitis (ringworm), alopecia, and seborrhea.

Bacteriology

Understand the three shapes of bacteria (cocci, bacilli, spirilla), how to distinguish contagious from noncontagious skin conditions, and how to handle parasitic infestations — particularly lice identification and the salon protocols required when a client presents with active lice.

Implements and Tools

Know straight razor maintenance (honing and stropping), clipper adjustment and care, scissor types and proper use, comb and brush selection, and safety rules for all electric tools used in a Texas barbershop.

Hair Cutting and Shaving Techniques

Study sectioning methods, clipper-over-comb, scissor-over-comb, fading, tapering, and blending. For shaving, know both standard and safety razor techniques, as well as mustache and beard trimming procedures.

Chemistry

Understand permanent wave chemistry (oxidation — thio solution breaks disulfide bonds, neutralizer reseals them), chemical relaxers (sodium hydroxide vs. ammonium thioglycolate differences), hair coloring (oxidation dyes, bleach, toners), and the purpose and procedure of a skin patch test for detecting allergic reactions to chemical services.

Texas Licensing Law

Know TDLR hour requirements for each license path, scope of practice for barbers vs. cosmetologists, salon establishment permit requirements, what TDLR inspectors check during a salon inspection, continuing education requirements for license renewal, and the criminal background check disclosure obligation on TDLR applications.
