In the TOEFL Integrated Writing task (Task 1), approximately how long should your response be?
Answer: 225–300 words
ETS recommends a response of approximately 150–225 words for Task 1, though longer responses can score well if relevant and coherent. Most high-scoring responses fall in the 200–300 word range. The goal is to address the prompt fully — not to write as much as possible.
For TOEFL Writing Task 2 (Independent Writing), ETS recommends your essay be at least:
Answer: 300 words
ETS officially states that responses should be at least 300 words for Task 2. However, high-scoring essays typically run 400–600 words. Responses under 300 words are penalized because they are unlikely to fully develop the argument with specific reasons and examples.
In TOEFL Integrated Writing, the professor's lecture typically does which of the following in relation to the reading passage?
Answer: Contradicts or casts doubt on the points made in the reading
In virtually all TOEFL Integrated Writing tasks, the professor's lecture challenges, contradicts, or casts doubt on the reading passage's main claims. This is a deliberate TOEFL design feature — each lecture point corresponds to a reading claim it undermines. Your job is to explain these challenges clearly.
A student's TOEFL Task 2 essay has three body paragraphs, each with only one sentence of support. A rater marks the essay down for "insufficient development." What is the MOST effective revision?
Answer: Expand each body paragraph with specific examples, reasoning, or details that explain and support the topic sentence
"Development" in TOEFL Writing means supporting each point with explanation and evidence — not just stating it. When body paragraphs have only one sentence, the fix is to expand them with concrete examples, logical reasoning, or personal scenarios. Adding more paragraphs or changing vocabulary does not solve the development problem.
Which TOEFL Writing Task 2 essay structure is considered MOST conventional and effective?
Answer: Introduction with thesis + three body paragraphs (each with topic sentence, support, and explanation) + conclusion
The 5-paragraph essay (introduction + 3 developed body paragraphs + conclusion) is the standard, most effective structure for TOEFL Task 2. Each body paragraph should have a topic sentence, specific supporting evidence, and explanation. Two paragraphs may limit development; refusing to take a position contradicts the prompt requirement.
A student writes in their TOEFL Task 2 essay: "In conclusion, as I have mentioned above, technology is important and has benefits and drawbacks." What is the PRIMARY weakness of this conclusion?
Answer: It merely restates the topic vaguely without reinforcing the thesis or leaving a strong final impression
A weak conclusion simply restates what was already said without synthesizing the argument or reinforcing the thesis. "Has benefits and drawbacks" is far too generic — a strong conclusion should restate the specific thesis, briefly echo the main points, and potentially end with a broader implication or recommendation. Saying "as I mentioned above" is also considered informal and redundant.
