Data Visualization and Chart Types Flashcards

In Spotfire, what does 'Shape By' encoding provide in a scatter plot?

Answer: Assigns different marker shapes to distinguish categorical values

'Shape By' maps categorical column values to different marker shapes (circle, square, triangle, etc.) for visual differentiation.

Which Spotfire visualization is purpose-built for displaying data on a geographic map?

Answer: Map chart

A map chart plots data points on geographic maps using latitude/longitude or regional boundaries.

In Spotfire, what is a 'KPI chart' primarily used for?

Answer: Displaying high-level key performance metrics with status indicators

A KPI chart displays aggregated metrics with visual status indicators (e.g., green/yellow/red) to quickly communicate performance.

How does 'Line similarity' work in a Spotfire line chart?

Answer: Colors lines by how similar their patterns are to a reference line

Line similarity colors each line based on its correlation or distance to a selected reference line, revealing similar trends.

What is the function of 'Reference lines' in Spotfire charts?

Answer: Add fixed or calculated horizontal/vertical lines as benchmarks or thresholds

Reference lines draw fixed or aggregated lines (e.g., average, target) on the chart to provide context benchmarks.

In Spotfire, what does enabling 'Show data points' on a line chart do?

Answer: Adds individual data markers at each measured point along the line

Enabling 'Show data points' overlays dot markers at each data measurement on the line, making individual observations visible.
