The TDC (Theoretical Driving Course) is the written component of South Africa's Learner's Licence examination, governed by the K53 defensive driving system. Before you can legally drive on South African roads, you must pass this theory test administered by your provincial transport department. The exam covers three core sections: road signs, rules of the road, and vehicle controls โ and you need a minimum score of 77% to pass.
Preparing with a printable PDF lets you study anywhere โ at home, on your commute, or in a waiting room โ without needing internet access. Our free TDC practice test PDF mirrors the structure and difficulty of the real exam so you can build confidence before test day.
The TDC is divided into three sections that test your knowledge of South African road law and the K53 system.
You must identify and understand regulatory signs (red circles โ prohibitions and obligations), warning signs (yellow/white triangles and diamonds โ hazards ahead), and informatory signs (rectangles โ direction and information). Regulatory signs carry legal weight; failing to obey them is a traffic offence. Warning signs alert you to upcoming hazards such as sharp bends, pedestrian crossings, and schools.
This section tests right-of-way rules at intersections (yield lines vs. stop lines vs. traffic circles), traffic signal meanings (green, amber, red, flashing amber), following distances (the 2-second rule under normal conditions, extended in wet or poor-visibility conditions), safe stopping distances at various speeds, speed limits (60 km/h urban, 100 km/h rural, 120 km/h freeway), lane discipline, and special rules governing heavy vehicles and motorcycles on public roads.
Candidates must know the function of all primary and secondary controls โ steering, brakes, accelerator, clutch, gear selector, handbrake โ as well as pre-trip checks such as tyre pressure, oil level, coolant, lights, and windscreen wipers. Understanding when a vehicle is roadworthy is a legal and safety requirement.
K53 is the core philosophy running through every section of the TDC. The Mirror-Signal-Mirror-Speed-Mirror (MSMSM) sequence must be applied before every manoeuvre: check mirrors, signal your intention, check mirrors again, adjust speed, do a final mirror check, then execute. Defensive driving means anticipating hazards, maintaining escape routes, and never assuming another driver will act correctly.
Print the PDF single-sided so you can write your answers directly on the page. Work through each section timed โ aim to spend no more than 45 seconds per question, matching the pace required in the real exam. After completing a section, score yourself and note every question you answered incorrectly. Return to the K53 manual or road sign charts for those topics and re-test yourself the following day.
For best results, combine the printable PDF with our online TDC practice tests, which give you instant feedback, detailed explanations for wrong answers, and a running score tracker. The PDF is ideal for final-day revision when you want a quiet, screen-free study session.
Candidates who struggle most often do so on road-sign recognition and right-of-way rules โ two areas where repetition matters. Run through the signs section of the PDF at least three times before your exam date, and quiz a friend or family member using the questions to reinforce memory through teaching.
