  1. An aircraft is shown from the front, in a right bank, with its nose pitched down slightly. What is the aircraft doing?

    Answer: Descending and turning right

Right bank = right turn. Nose pitched down = descending. Combined: the aircraft is in a descending right turn.

  2. From directly ahead (head-on view), an aircraft shows its right wing as the observer's left wing. If the aircraft's left wing appears higher, which bank direction is the aircraft in?

    Answer: Left bank

In head-on view, the aircraft's left side appears on the observer's right. If the aircraft's left wing appears higher (on the observer's right), the aircraft is banked left (left wing up, right wing down).

  3. An observer on the ground sees a helicopter flying overhead from south to north. The helicopter is banked, with the east side lower. What turn is the helicopter making?

Answer: Turning east (right bank from pilot's perspective)

Heading north, the pilot's right side is east. East side lower = right wing lower = right bank = right turn (turning east).

  4. A helicopter is seen from the side, flying right to left with its nose pointed at the ground at a steep angle. What is it doing?

Answer: Making a steep approach or dive

Nose pointed at the ground at a steep angle while moving forward indicates either a steep approach to land or a dive, not level flight or a climb.

  5. Two aircraft are flying in formation. Aircraft 1 is level, heading east. Aircraft 2 is to its right (south side) in a slight left bank. What will Aircraft 2 do if it continues?

Answer: Turn left (toward Aircraft 1, heading north)

Aircraft 2 is in a left bank, which means it is turning left. 'Left' for an aircraft heading east is toward north — which is also toward Aircraft 1.

  6. An aircraft's attitude indicator shows the aircraft symbol below the artificial horizon line with the wings level. What is the aircraft doing?

Answer: Descending in level wings flight

On an attitude indicator, the aircraft symbol below the horizon line indicates a nose-down (descending) attitude. Wings level means no bank (no turn). Therefore: descending, wings level.
