SIA Licence Types

The SIA issues different licences depending on the security role. You must hold the correct licence type for the work you do:

  • Door Supervisor (DS): Required for working on doors of licensed premises (pubs, clubs, concerts). One of the most common SIA licences. Training: 4–6 days (Level 2 Award for Door Supervisors).
  • Security Guard (SG): For retail security, event security, static guarding roles that don't involve licensed premises doors. Training: 2–4 days (Level 2 Award for Security Guards).
  • CCTV Operator (Public Space Surveillance): Required for operating CCTV in public spaces. Training: 2–4 days (Level 2 Award for CCTV Operators).
  • Close Protection (CP): Bodyguard/personal protection work. Training is more extensive — typically 120+ hours of specialist training (Level 3 Award for Close Protection Operatives).
  • Vehicle Immobiliser: For wheel clamping and vehicle immobilisation on private land.
  • Key Holder: For keyholder response services — responding to alarms at client premises.

A Door Supervisor licence allows you to work as a Security Guard as well — many professionals obtain DS first for the broader scope.

SIA Training Requirements

Before applying for an SIA licence, you must complete an Ofqual-regulated qualification from an approved training provider. The training includes both knowledge units and physical skills depending on the licence type.

Door Supervisor training (most common):

  • Working in the Private Security Industry
  • Physical Intervention Skills — techniques for dealing with conflicts and restraint
  • Working as a Door Supervisor
  • First Aid at Work qualification (Emergency First Aid at Work, EFAW, or full First Aid at Work)

Security Guard training:

  • Working in the Private Security Industry
  • Working as a Security Officer
  • First Aid at Work (EFAW minimum)

Training providers must be approved by an Awarding Organisation (City & Guilds, Highfield, NOCN, etc.) and deliver Ofqual-regulated qualifications. After completing training, your awarding organisation registers you with the SIA's approved list — you'll need this registration to submit your licence application.

SIA Licence Application Process

The SIA badge application is completed online through the SIA website (sia.homeoffice.gov.uk). You cannot apply until your training is registered with the awarding organisation and you meet all eligibility requirements.

Step-by-step SIA application:

  1. Complete approved training: Finish your Ofqual-regulated qualification from an SIA-approved training provider. Wait for your awarding organisation to register your qualification (typically 2–5 business days after completing the course).
  2. Gather required documents:
    • Proof of identity (passport, biometric residence permit, or photocard driving licence)
    • Proof of right to work in the UK
    • National Insurance number
    • 5-year address history
    • Training qualification reference number from your awarding organisation
  3. Create an SIA account and apply online: Register at sia.homeoffice.gov.uk and complete the application form. The form captures personal details, work history, qualification details, and declaration of criminal convictions.
  4. Pay the fee: £190 application fee by debit or credit card online.
  5. DBS check is initiated: The SIA automatically initiates an Enhanced DBS check as part of the application. You do not need to obtain a separate DBS certificate — the SIA handles this.
  6. Wait for processing: The SIA reviews your application once the DBS result is returned. Standard processing takes 2–4 weeks after DBS completion. You can track your application online.
  7. Receive your SIA badge: If approved, your SIA licence card is mailed to your registered address. The card includes your name, photograph, licence type, and expiry date.
