SHSAT Practice Test

โ–ถ

If you're applying to one of New York City's elite specialized high schools, the SHSAT is the only thing standing between you and your dream school. Getting your hands on a solid SHSAT practice test PDF is one of the smartest moves you can make โ€” you can drill offline, annotate passages, and simulate real test conditions without a screen in the way.

This guide covers everything you need to know about the exam format, what each section tests, and exactly how to use PDF practice materials to maximize your score.

SHSAT at a Glance

Who Takes the SHSAT?

The Specialized High Schools Admissions Test is required for admission to eight of New York City's nine specialized high schools. You're eligible if you're currently in 8th or 9th grade and attend a New York City school โ€” public, private, or homeschool. The nine specialized schools include:

Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School uses auditions and portfolios instead of the SHSAT, so it's the one exception. For all the others, your SHSAT composite score is the single admissions criterion โ€” nothing else matters.

What Does the SHSAT Test?

ELA Section โ€” 57 Questions

The English Language Arts section is split into two parts: Revising/Editing and Reading Comprehension.

Revising/Editing gives you standalone sentences or short passages and asks you to fix grammar, punctuation, word choice, and sentence structure. You need a solid understanding of standard written English โ€” not just what sounds right, but what the rules actually are.

Reading Comprehension includes literary and informational passages, each followed by multiple-choice questions. You'll be asked about main idea, inference, vocabulary in context, author's purpose, and textual evidence. These passages can be dense. Practicing with real passage-style PDFs helps you build the stamina to work through them under time pressure.

One thing to note: scrambled paragraphs are no longer on the SHSAT. They were removed in 2017. If you're using older prep materials, skip those sections โ€” they won't appear on the current exam.

Math Section โ€” 57 Questions

The Math section covers a wide range of topics you'd typically see in 6th through 8th grade curriculum. Expect questions in these areas:

Grid-in questions deserve special attention. There are only five of them, but they show up near the end of the math section. You can't guess your way through these โ€” you have to calculate a real answer and write it in. PDF practice gives you a natural format for working through these by hand, which mirrors what you'll do on test day.

SHSAT Scoring: What You Need to Know

Why PDF Practice Works

Most students spend all their prep time on screens. That's a mistake. The SHSAT is a paper-and-pencil test โ€” you bubble answers, write in margins, cross out wrong choices. Practicing the same way matters more than you'd think.

With a printed or downloadable SHSAT study guide PDF, you can:

Offline drilling also builds concentration. Three hours is a long time to stay focused. The more you practice in realistic conditions โ€” no phone, timer running, paper in hand โ€” the less the actual test will feel overwhelming.

How to Use This SHSAT Practice Test PDF Effectively

Downloading the PDF is step one. Here's how to actually get value from it:

  1. Time yourself strictly. You get 180 minutes for 114 questions. That's about 95 seconds per question. Don't give yourself extra time โ€” it creates false confidence.
  2. Don't skip sections. Even if you feel stronger in Math, work through both sections every practice session. ELA improvement is often where students leave the most points on the table.
  3. Review every wrong answer. Not just "I got this wrong" but "why did I get this wrong?" Pattern recognition is the whole point. If you keep missing inference questions in ELA, that's your target. If word problems wreck you every time, drill them specifically.
  4. Re-take after two weeks. Fresh eyes help you see whether you've actually fixed the patterns or just memorized the answers.
  5. Combine with online quizzes. PDF practice covers format and endurance. Online practice covers immediate feedback and variety.

Section Strategy Tips

ELA: Work Smart on Passages

Don't read the passage front to back before looking at the questions. Skim it first โ€” get the structure and main idea โ€” then read the questions. Go back to specific sections only when a question points you there. This saves several minutes per passage, which adds up fast across the full ELA section.

For Revising/Editing, trust the rules over your ear. If a sentence sounds fine but violates subject-verb agreement, the rules win. Review comma splices, run-ons, pronoun-antecedent agreement, and modifier placement. These patterns repeat.

Math: Don't Rush the Setup

The most common math mistake on the SHSAT isn't a calculation error โ€” it's misreading the problem. Slow down at the start of each word problem. Identify what's being asked before you write a single number. Then set up your equation or diagram before solving.

For geometry, draw figures even when they're provided. Labeling your own diagram forces you to process the given information actively instead of scanning it passively.

Is there a free SHSAT practice test PDF available?

Yes โ€” you can download a free SHSAT practice test PDF from this page. It includes full ELA and Math sections with an answer key.

How many questions are on the SHSAT?

The SHSAT has 114 questions total: 57 ELA and 57 Math. You have 3 hours (180 minutes) to complete the entire test.

Are scrambled paragraphs still on the SHSAT?

No. Scrambled paragraphs were removed from the SHSAT in 2017. The current ELA section focuses on Revising/Editing and Reading Comprehension only. Skip scrambled paragraph sections in older study materials.

What is a good SHSAT score?

The SHSAT is scored on a scale of 200โ€“800. Cutoff scores vary by school and year. Stuyvesant typically requires the highest composite score โ€” often in the 550โ€“580+ range. Brooklyn Tech and Bronx Science generally have lower cutoffs. Check the NYC DOE website for the most current cutoff data.

Who is eligible to take the SHSAT?

Current 8th and 9th grade students who attend a New York City school โ€” public, private, charter, or homeschool โ€” are eligible. 9th graders can only apply to 10th grade seats, which are limited.

How should I use an SHSAT study guide PDF?

Print it and work through it under timed, realistic conditions: 180 minutes, no phone, pencil on paper. After finishing, review every wrong answer and identify patterns. Re-take a fresh test two to three weeks later to measure improvement.
