✍️ Sample SIA Questions & Answers

1. Which of the following drugs is classified as Class C in the UK?
Ketamine

Ketamine was reclassified as a Class B drug in 2014. However, benzodiazepines, GHB, and anabolic steroids remain Class C. Note: This question tests awareness that ketamine was upgraded to Class B in June 2014.

2. A venue patron shows signs of GHB overdose: loss of consciousness, slow breathing, and vomiting. What is the immediate priority?
Place them in the recovery position, call 999, and monitor breathing until paramedics arrive

GHB overdose can cause respiratory depression and death. The person should be placed in the recovery position to prevent choking on vomit, 999 called immediately, and breathing monitored. Never leave them alone or place them on their back.

3. What is a Designated Premises Supervisor (DPS)?
The named individual who holds day-to-day responsibility for the premises licence

The DPS must hold a personal licence and is responsible for authorising alcohol sales and managing the premises.

4. Why is it important to communicate during physical intervention?
To tell the person what you're doing, give commands, and reassure them to gain compliance

Clear communication during restraint ('Calm down, I'm holding you for your safety') can reduce resistance, reassure the person, and demonstrates professionalism to witnesses.

5. What does 'NPS' stand for in relation to UK drug awareness?
New Psychoactive Substances

NPS stands for New Psychoactive Substances, formerly known as 'legal highs'. The Psychoactive Substances Act 2016 made it illegal to produce, supply, or import any psychoactive substance intended for human consumption.

6. What factor does a court consider when deciding if force was reasonable?
What a reasonable person would have done in the same circumstances with the same knowledge

The 'reasonable person' test asks what someone with the same knowledge and circumstances would have done. Hindsight is not applied — it's based on what you knew at the time.
