SAEE Practice Test PDF โ€“ Free Senior Armed Forces Entrance Exam Questions 2026

The Senior Armed Forces Entrance Exam (SAEE) is used by the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) to assess applicants for officer and senior Non-Commissioned Member (NCM) positions. Administered at Canadian Forces Recruiting Centres, the SAEE evaluates higher-level reasoning across four key sections: Verbal Skills, Spatial Ability, Problem Solving, and Abstract/Figural Reasoning.

What Is on the SAEE?

The SAEE tests four cognitive domains that predict success in demanding military officer and senior NCM roles. Understanding each section helps you allocate study time effectively.

Verbal Skills

Reading comprehension passages with follow-up questions, vocabulary in context, analogies, and sentence completion. Strong readers with a wide vocabulary perform well in this section.

Spatial Ability

Mental rotation of 3D objects, paper folding and unfolding, block counting, and identifying rotated or reflected shapes. This section is often the most unfamiliar to candidates โ€” consistent practice is essential.

Problem Solving

Arithmetic operations including fractions, decimals, percentages, and ratios; basic algebra; word problems involving rates, distances, time, and proportions; and data interpretation from tables and graphs.

Abstract / Figural Reasoning

Pattern completion, series completion, and identifying the odd figure out from a set of shapes. These questions assess fluid intelligence and are independent of learned knowledge.

SAEE vs. CFAT

The CFAT (Canadian Forces Aptitude Test) is the standard aptitude test for most CAF entry routes. The SAEE tests higher-level reasoning and is required specifically for officer candidates and positions demanding advanced aptitude. Both scores may be used together in selection decisions.

What is the SAEE used for in the Canadian Armed Forces?

The SAEE (Senior Armed Forces Entrance Exam) is used by the CAF to assess applicants for officer and senior Non-Commissioned Member (NCM) positions. Results are combined with CFAT scores and other selection criteria when evaluating candidates for officer and specialist occupations.

How is the SAEE different from the CFAT?

The CFAT (Canadian Forces Aptitude Test) is the standard aptitude test for most CAF entry routes. The SAEE tests higher-level reasoning โ€” including spatial ability and abstract/figural reasoning โ€” and is used specifically for officer candidates and roles requiring advanced aptitude. Both tests may be used together in selection decisions.

Which SAEE section is hardest to prepare for?

Most candidates find the Spatial Ability section the most challenging because it tests skills โ€” mental rotation, paper folding, block counting โ€” that are rarely practised in everyday academic or work settings. Devoting consistent daily practice to spatial reasoning questions well before your test date is the most effective preparation strategy.

Is the SAEE the only requirement for CAF officer selection?

No. The SAEE is one component of the selection process. Officer candidates must also complete the CFAT, a physical fitness evaluation (FORCE test), a medical examination, interviews, and a security clearance process. All components are assessed together in determining suitability for a specific occupation.
