RPSGT Certification

To become a certified rpsgt, you will need to complete an accredited program that offers training in the field of polysomnography. This will include a minimum of 80 hours of classroom and laboratory instruction. This will teach you the basic skills of working in a sleep lab, as well as the history of sleep medicine and the role of polysomnography in the diagnosis of sleep disorders.

Some states require a degree from an accredited polysomnography program before you can work as a sleep technician. Others will allow you to take a national registry exam through the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT). The BRPT also offers a Certified Sleep Technologist (CPSGT) credential for those without clinical experience. This will last for three years.

Worked examples: how to reason through RPSGT questions

These are practice questions written for this site, not questions from the real exam. Each explanation shows why the right answer is right and why the others are wrong.

Example 1

Question: REM sleep is identified by which combination of polysomnographic features?

1. Low-amplitude mixed-frequency EEG, low chin EMG tone, and rapid eye movements
2. High-amplitude delta EEG, absent eye movements, and high chin EMG tone
3. Sleep spindles, low chin EMG, and slow rolling eye movements
4. Alpha EEG, high chin EMG, and REMs

Answer: A. Low-amplitude mixed-frequency EEG, low chin EMG tone, and rapid eye movements

Explanation:

Option A is correct. REM sleep shows low-amplitude mixed-frequency EEG, low chin EMG tone and rapid eye movements. Option B describes deep non-REM sleep: high-amplitude slow delta waves, no eye movements and preserved muscle tone. Option C mixes spindles, which mark non-REM stage sleep, with slow rolling eye movements, which belong to the transition into sleep, so it is not REM. Option D has alpha EEG and high chin EMG, which fit relaxed wakefulness, even though REMs can appear in wake. Rule to remember: REM is the stage where the brain looks active but the chin muscle tone is at its lowest. Check all three channels before naming the stage.

Example 2

Question: For pediatric PSG, AASM recommends a minimum paper speed (or display equivalent) of:

1. 15 mm/sec (or 15-second epochs for scoring)
2. 10 mm/sec (30-second epochs)
3. 30 mm/sec (10-second epochs)
4. 60 mm/sec (5-second epochs)

Answer: C. 30 mm/sec (10-second epochs)

Explanation:

Option C is correct. Pediatric recordings contain faster EEG activity, so the display needs to be compressed to a 30 mm/sec equivalent, which shows a 10-second view. Option A, 15 mm/sec, and option B, 10 mm/sec with 30-second epochs, are slower settings that squeeze waveforms together and make fast activity harder to read. Option D, 60 mm/sec with 5-second epochs, would stretch the display so much that it shows too little of the record at a time. Rule to remember: pediatric studies use a faster display setting than the one most people picture for adult review, and you should match the display to the frequencies you need to see.

Example 3

Question: A sleep lab manager observes that staff morale has declined after a major policy change. According to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, which level is most likely affected?

1. Physiological needs
2. Safety and security needs
3. Social/belonging needs
4. Esteem needs

Answer: D. Esteem needs

Explanation:

Option D, esteem needs, is correct. A policy change that reduces recognition, autonomy or respect for staff threatens how valued they feel, and that shows up as lower morale. Option A, physiological needs, covers basics such as rest and food, which a policy change does not usually touch. Option B, safety and security, would fit if the change put jobs or income at risk, but the question describes morale, not job security. Option C, social and belonging needs, concerns relationships and team connection, which are not what changed here. Rule to remember: match the symptom to the need. Feeling undervalued points to esteem.

How to use these practice tests

Start by reading the BRPT handbook so you know the eligibility pathway you will use, the exam format and the content areas. Then take one of our practice sets for each content area without looking anything up, and note which areas feel weakest.

Give the most time to the two largest areas, Sleep Study Preparation and Performance and Treatment and Intervention, then to Scoring, Reporting, and Data Verification. Work through the PAP therapy, technical setup and sleep staging sets in short sittings, and read the explanation for every question, including the ones you got right.

When you miss a question, write down the rule behind it rather than the answer. For example, record how REM differs from wake on the EEG, EMG and eye channels. Return to those notes before your next set.

Use the supporting sets on documentation, ethics, communication and quality assurance to cover the patient support side of the work. Closer to test day, run practice sets with a timer so you get used to reading and choosing answers at the pace the real exam needs. RPSGT Board Prep

The RPSGT exam is available to candidates 48 days of the year at hundreds of locations throughout the United States and internationally. BRPT has also recently made the exam more accessible by moving it to computer-based testing, which has reduced registration and test administration time.

The exam consists of 175 multiple choice items, with four options each (a, b, c and d). Each item is followed by a descriptive answer explanation. Candidates are allowed 180 minutes to complete the exam, including a 10-minute break. A calculator is provided in the computer program, and candidates are encouraged to use it during the exam.

During the exam, a proctor monitors candidate behavior and makes sure that they do not disrupt the integrity of the examination. In addition, the exam proctor will ask you to sign a Confidentiality and Non Disclosure Agreement. This is important, as failure to agree to the terms will result in your immediate termination from the exam. Then you will be required to pay a $100 fee to take the exam again.
