RMS RMS Quality & Compliance 4

Question 1

Which ASTM standard is most relevant to radon mitigation system installation practices?

Accepted Answer

ASTM E2121

Answer

ASTM E2121 is the standard practice for installing radon mitigation systems in existing low-rise residential buildings.

Question 2

When an RMS discovers an active sump pump pit during a pre-mitigation inspection, what is the primary compliance concern?

Accepted Answer

The pit can be a major radon entry pathway requiring sealing or special treatment

Answer

Sump pits communicate directly with the sub-slab environment and must be addressed to prevent them from bypassing the mitigation system.

Question 3

Which labeling requirement must be met for a properly installed radon mitigation system according to EPA standards of practice?

Accepted Answer

All system components must be labeled with the installation date and contractor contact information

Answer

EPA standards require durable labeling on system components with installation date, contractor information, and a caution about system modification.

Question 4

A state radon program audit reveals an RMS installed a system without obtaining the required building permit. What is the most likely consequence?

Accepted Answer

Potential license suspension and requirement to obtain retroactive permits

Answer

Operating without required permits can lead to license suspension, fines, and remediation requirements under state contractor law.

Question 5

What is the purpose of a pressure field extension (PFE) test during a pre-mitigation diagnostic?

Accepted Answer

To determine how far negative pressure extends under the slab from a suction point

Answer

The PFE test uses a vacuum and manometer to map how far suction can communicate under the slab, guiding pipe placement decisions.
