RMS Health & Safety Regulations in Radon Mitigation 4

Question 1

According to ANSI/AARST MAH-2017, what is the minimum horizontal distance a radon fan exhaust must be from an operable window or door on the same or adjacent building?

Accepted Answer

10 feet

Answer

ANSI/AARST MAH-2017 requires radon exhaust discharge points to be at least 10 feet horizontally from any operable window, door, or gravity air intake to prevent re-entry.

Question 2

Which lung cancer risk classification has the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) assigned to radon?

Accepted Answer

Group 1 – known human carcinogen

Answer

IARC classifies radon as a Group 1 known human carcinogen based on sufficient epidemiological evidence linking indoor radon exposure to lung cancer.

Question 3

When working in a confined space during radon mitigation, what OSHA standard primarily governs entry procedures?

Accepted Answer

29 CFR 1910.146 (Permit-Required Confined Spaces)

Answer

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.146 governs permit-required confined space entry, which applies when radon contractors must enter crawl spaces or other spaces meeting the confined space definition.

Question 4

Under the Clean Air Act, radon is regulated as an indoor air pollutant primarily through which mechanism?

Accepted Answer

Voluntary guidance programs and state-level regulations rather than federal NAAQS

Answer

Unlike outdoor pollutants, indoor radon is addressed through EPA voluntary guidance, public education, and state regulatory programs rather than binding federal NAAQS under the Clean Air Act.

Question 5

What is the purpose of the diagnostic System Performance Check (SPC) that ANSI/AARST standards require after radon system installation?

Accepted Answer

To verify that the system is operating as designed by measuring pressure differentials and airflow

Answer

The SPC verifies system performance by measuring sub-slab pressure differentials and fan operation, confirming the system is functioning as designed before post-mitigation testing.
