RCDD Outside Plant (OSP) Design and Campus Distribution

Question 1

Which standard specifies requirements for customer-owned outside plant telecommunications infrastructure?

Accepted Answer

ANSI/TIA-758

Answer

ANSI/TIA-758 covers customer-owned outside plant (OSP) infrastructure, including pathways, cable, and termination between buildings. TIA-568.1 covers commercial building cabling, TIA-569 covers pathways and spaces inside buildings, and TIA-607 covers grounding and bonding.

Question 2

A campus backbone cable will run through underground conduit that may hold water for long periods. Which cable construction is most appropriate?

Accepted Answer

Filled-core (gel-filled) or water-blocked OSP cable

Answer

Cable in wet underground ducts needs water-blocking, either gel-filled or dry water-blocked construction, so water cannot migrate along the cable. Riser and plenum ratings address fire behavior, not moisture.

Question 3

What is the typical minimum bend radius for an outside plant fiber optic cable while it is under pulling tension?

Accepted Answer

20 times the cable diameter

Answer

OSP fiber cable is generally limited to a bend radius of 20 times its outer diameter under tension and 10 times with no tension (installed). Tighter bends risk attenuation or fiber damage.

Question 4

What is the main purpose of installing innerduct inside a larger underground conduit?

Accepted Answer

To subdivide the conduit into separate pathways and protect fiber cables

Answer

Innerduct subdivides a conduit so several cables can be installed, added, or removed independently, and it provides a low-friction path that protects fiber cables.

Question 5

Under the NEC, how far may a non-listed outside plant cable generally extend into a building before it must be terminated or transitioned to a listed cable?

Accepted Answer

15 m (50 ft)

Answer

The NEC generally permits OSP-rated cable to enter a building up to 15 m (50 ft) before it must end at a splice or protector or transition to listed indoor cable. Past that point the jacket's fire performance becomes a hazard.
