Founded in 1995, PTCB administers the Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) exam, the gold standard credential for pharmacy tech professionals working in retail, hospital, and specialty pharmacy settings.

Eligibility Requirements
To sit for the PTCB CPhT exam, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Education: A high school diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
- Training pathway: Completion of a PTCB-recognized education/training program, or at least 500 hours of pharmacy technician work experience with employer documentation.
- Criminal background: No drug-related felony convictions at any point. All criminal history must be disclosed; PTCB reviews each case individually.
- Disclosure: Any denial, suspension, or revocation of a pharmacy technician license must be disclosed.
Most candidates complete an accredited pharmacy technician program (typically 6-12 months at a community college or vocational school) before sitting for the exam. These programs align coursework with the four PTCB content areas, providing the strongest preparation.
PTCB Exam Format
The CPhT exam consists of 100 questions total — 90 scored and 10 unscored pilot questions randomly distributed throughout. The exam is administered via computer at Pearson VUE testing centers nationwide.
Four content areas with weighted coverage:
- Medications (40%) — brand/generic drug names, drug classifications, therapeutic uses, side effects, contraindications, high-alert medications, look-alike/sound-alike drugs.
- Patient Safety and Quality Assurance (26.25%) — error prevention, reporting, handling hazardous drugs, storage requirements, infection control.
- Order Entry and Processing (21.25%) — prescription intake, calculations, compounding, labeling, inventory management, billing, prior authorizations.

Passing Score and Exam Fees
