Radio Communications and Phraseology Flashcards

What does the term 'ROGER' mean in aviation radio communications?

Answer: I have received all of your last transmission

ROGER means the pilot has received all of the last transmission — it does not mean agreement or compliance.

How should an altitude of 10,500 feet be stated in a radio transmission?

Answer: Ten thousand five hundred

Altitudes are stated in the natural number format in plain language: 'ten thousand five hundred feet.'

What does 'PAN-PAN' signal in a radio transmission?

Answer: An urgent situation that requires assistance but is not immediately life-threatening

PAN-PAN (repeated three times) indicates an urgent situation requiring assistance, less critical than a MAYDAY but needing priority handling.

What information should a pilot give first when making an initial radio call to ATC?

Answer: State the facility being called first, then own call sign

The standard format is to address the facility first (e.g., 'Seattle Center'), then state your own aircraft call sign to alert the controller.

What does 'NEGATIVE' mean in aviation radio phraseology?

Answer: No, or permission is not granted, or that is not correct

NEGATIVE is the official aviation word for 'no' — it confirms refusal, denial, or disagreement without ambiguity.

When ATC issues a squawk code, what does the pilot do?

Answer: Enter the four-digit code into the aircraft's transponder

A squawk code is entered into the aircraft's transponder, allowing radar to identify and track the specific aircraft.
