Rule to remember: inside diameter is always smaller than outside diameter, and the wall counts on both sides. A quick sanity check on size will rule out any answer larger than the outside diameter.

Example 3

Question: When two gears mesh together, the larger gear is called the gear and the smaller is called the pinion. If the pinion has 15 teeth and the gear has 60 teeth, what is the speed ratio (gear to pinion)?

1. 1:4
2. 1:2
3. 2:1
4. 4:1

Answer: D. 4:1

Explanation:

Option D, 4:1, is correct. The gear has 60 teeth and the pinion has 15, so the gear has four times as many teeth. Meshed gears pass the same number of teeth per turn, so the smaller pinion must turn four times for each turn of the larger gear.

Option A, 1:4, flips the ratio and describes the gear turning faster than the pinion. Option B, 1:2, and option C, 2:1, do not match the tooth counts; neither 60 divided by 15 nor its inverse gives those values.

Rule to remember: the gear with fewer teeth turns faster. Divide the tooth counts, then check the direction of the ratio against the wording of the question.

How to use these practice tests

Start by finding out from the hiring company which sections you will sit and which version of the math test applies. Then read the official EEI material so you know the format and timing of each section.

Take one practice set from each content area to find your weakest section. Do not time that first attempt; focus on understanding why each answer is right. After that, work the weaker areas more often, using the figural reasoning, mathematical usage, mechanical concepts and reading comprehension sets linked in the table above.

Once your accuracy is steady, add the clock. Because the full battery takes about 2 hours, do at least one longer sitting so your focus holds up.
