  1. A prescription for Metformin 500 mg reads '#60, 1 tab BID.' What is the days supply?

    Answer: 30 days

    60 tablets ÷ 2 tablets/day (BID) = 30 days supply.

  2. A child weighs 22 lbs. The recommended dose is 10 mg/kg/day divided BID. What is each individual dose?

    Answer: 50 mg

    22 lbs ÷ 2.2 = 10 kg; 10 mg/kg × 10 kg = 100 mg/day ÷ 2 = 50 mg per dose.

  3. A TPN bag contains 500 mL of dextrose 50% (D50W). How many grams of dextrose are in the bag?

    Answer: 250 g

    50% w/v = 50 g per 100 mL; 50 g/100 mL × 500 mL = 250 g of dextrose.

  4. If 1 teaspoon equals 5 mL, how many teaspoons are in a 150 mL bottle?

    Answer: 30 tsp

    150 mL ÷ 5 mL/tsp = 30 teaspoons.

  5. A powder for reconstitution has a powder volume of 10 mL. Adding 90 mL of water gives a final concentration of 250 mg/5 mL. What is the total volume after reconstitution?

    Answer: 100 mL

    Total volume = diluent volume + powder volume = 90 mL + 10 mL = 100 mL.

  6. A 1 in 4 dilution is needed; the final volume required is 200 mL. How much concentrate is needed?

    Answer: 50 mL

    A 1:4 dilution means 1 part concentrate in 4 total parts; 1/4 × 200 mL = 50 mL of concentrate.

  7. Convert 0.5 g to milligrams.

    Answer: 500 mg

    There are 1,000 mg in 1 g; 0.5 g × 1,000 = 500 mg.
