What is paintless dent repair (PDR)?
Paintless dent repair (PDR) is a technique used to remove minor dents and dings from a vehicle's body panels without the need for filler, sanding, or repainting. Technicians use specialized rods and tools to gently massage the metal back to its original shape from behind the panel. PDR preserves the original factory paint finish, making it faster and more cost-effective than traditional dent repair methods.
What tools are used in PDR?
PDR technicians use a variety of hand tools including metal rods of different lengths and tip shapes to push dents from behind, as well as glue pulling systems that attach to the surface for dents that cannot be accessed from the rear. LED light boards and reflective panels are used to illuminate the surface and visualize low spots during the repair. Tap-down tools and knock-downs help finesse the metal and correct high spots during the final stages.
What types of dents can be fixed with PDR?
PDR is most effective on round or shallow dents caused by hail, door dings, minor collisions, and falling objects where the paint surface remains intact. Sharp creases, dents with paint damage (chips or cracks), or damage near the edge of a panel are generally not suitable for PDR. The technique works best on steel panels, though aluminum panels can also be repaired by experienced PDR technicians using adapted methods.
