Ontario Security Guard Test Emergency Response Procedures 2 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: What is a 'muster point' or 'assembly area' in an evacuation?
- The location where fire trucks park
- A pre-designated safe location where evacuated people gather to be accounted for (Correct answer)
- The fire alarm panel location
- The security guard's office
Correct answer: A pre-designated safe location where evacuated people gather to be accounted for
A muster point is a pre-designated safe location away from the building where evacuated individuals gather. This allows for headcounts to ensure everyone has evacuated safely.
Question 2: What type of fire extinguisher should be used on an electrical fire?
- Water-based (Class A)
- Carbon dioxide (CO2) or dry chemical (Class C) (Correct answer)
- Foam-based (Class B)
- Any available extinguisher
Correct answer: Carbon dioxide (CO2) or dry chemical (Class C)
Electrical fires (Class C) require non-conductive extinguishing agents like CO2 or dry chemical. Using water on an electrical fire can cause electrocution.
Question 3: What should a security guard do if they discover a suspicious package?
- Open the package to determine its contents
- Do not touch it, evacuate the area, establish a perimeter, and contact police immediately (Correct answer)
- Move it to a less populated area
- Place it in a dumpster
Correct answer: Do not touch it, evacuate the area, establish a perimeter, and contact police immediately
A suspicious package should never be touched or moved. The guard should evacuate the immediate area, establish a safety perimeter, and contact police bomb disposal units immediately.
Question 4: What is the recommended evacuation procedure for a person with a mobility disability?
- Leave them behind and inform firefighters of their location
- Assist them to a designated area of refuge (stairwell landing) and inform emergency responders of their location (Correct answer)
- Carry them down the stairs immediately
- Tell them to use the elevator
Correct answer: Assist them to a designated area of refuge (stairwell landing) and inform emergency responders of their location
Persons with mobility disabilities should be guided to a designated area of refuge (typically a fire-rated stairwell landing) and emergency responders should be notified of their exact location for assisted evacuation.
Question 5: During a medical emergency, what should a security guard do before providing first aid?
- Wait for paramedics to arrive
- Ensure scene safety, put on personal protective equipment (PPE), and assess the patient's condition (Correct answer)
- Ask bystanders for medical advice
- Move the injured person immediately
Correct answer: Ensure scene safety, put on personal protective equipment (PPE), and assess the patient's condition
Before providing first aid, the guard must ensure the scene is safe (no ongoing threats), don PPE (gloves) to prevent infection, and then assess the patient's condition using primary survey techniques.
Question 6: What is a 'lockdown' procedure?
- Locking all doors at the end of the business day
- Securing all entry and exit points to prevent an active threat from entering occupied areas (Correct answer)
- Locking up valuables in a safe
- A procedure for locking out dismissed employees
Correct answer: Securing all entry and exit points to prevent an active threat from entering occupied areas
A lockdown involves securing all entry and exit points, moving people away from doors and windows, and preventing movement within the building to protect occupants from an active threat (such as an active shooter).
