OLNA - Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment Reading: Identifying Main Ideas Questions and Answers — Questions and Answers
Question 1: Read the following paragraph and identify the main idea:
The community garden has become a central hub for residents of all ages. Every weekend, families are seen tending to their plots, sharing gardening tips, and harvesting fresh vegetables. Local schools organise excursions to the garden, teaching students about sustainable agriculture. Additionally, the garden hosts a monthly market where locals can sell their produce and handmade crafts. This has not only improved community spirit but has also provided a source of fresh, healthy food for many families.
- Local schools visit the garden for educational purposes.
- The garden hosts a popular monthly market.
- The community garden serves as a vital and multi-functional centre for residents. (Correct answer)
- Gardening is a healthy way for families to spend time together.
Correct answer: The community garden serves as a vital and multi-functional centre for residents.
The correct answer encapsulates all the different activities and benefits mentioned in the paragraph (family activities, school trips, local market, community spirit, fresh food). The other options are specific details that support this main idea, but they do not represent the overall point of the text.
Question 2: Which of the following is the BEST definition of a main idea in a text?
- An interesting detail or fact mentioned in the first sentence.
- The author's primary point or the most important message they want to convey. (Correct answer)
- A summary of every single detail included in the paragraph.
- The topic of the text, expressed in one or two words.
Correct answer: The author's primary point or the most important message they want to convey.
The main idea is the central point or argument the author is making about a topic. It's the core message that all the details in the text are meant to support and explain. A topic is just the general subject (e.g., 'dogs'), while the main idea makes a point about that topic (e.g., 'Dogs can be great helpers for people with disabilities').
Question 3: A student is reading a lengthy article about the history of the internet. To identify the main idea of the entire article, which strategy would be most effective?
- Reading only the first and last sentences of the article.
- Focusing on the most interesting statistic or fact presented.
- Looking at the title, headings, and subheadings, and then summarising the key points of each section. (Correct answer)
- Counting how many times specific keywords are repeated.
Correct answer: Looking at the title, headings, and subheadings, and then summarising the key points of each section.
For a long article, the main idea is built across different sections. Using text features like the title, headings, and subheadings provides a roadmap to the author's main points. Summarising each section helps to build a comprehensive understanding of the overall message. The other options are too narrow and might lead to a misinterpretation of the overall main idea.
Question 4: Read the passage below:
'Climate change presents a significant threat to global agriculture. Rising temperatures can lead to heat stress in crops, reducing yields. Changes in rainfall patterns can cause both droughts and floods, both of which are devastating for farming. Furthermore, the proliferation of pests and diseases in warmer climates poses additional risks to food security.'
What is the main idea of this paragraph?
- Pests and diseases are becoming more common.
- Rising temperatures are bad for crop yields.
- Climate change negatively impacts agriculture in multiple ways. (Correct answer)
- Droughts and floods are a major problem for farmers.
Correct answer: Climate change negatively impacts agriculture in multiple ways.
This statement is the most comprehensive summary of the paragraph's content. The other options (rising temperatures, pests, droughts/floods) are all specific examples or supporting details that explain *how* climate change is a threat to agriculture. The main idea is the overarching point that connects all these details.
Question 5: The main idea of a paragraph is not always stated directly in one sentence. In such cases, it is said to be...
- a supporting detail.
- the topic sentence.
- an incorrect idea.
- implied. (Correct answer)
Correct answer: implied.
When a main idea is not explicitly written in a single sentence, the reader must infer it from the supporting details provided. This is known as an 'implied' main idea. The details, facts, and examples in the text all point towards this central idea.
Question 6: After reading a text, a student summarises it in their own words. Which of the following indicates they have successfully identified the main idea?
- The summary is an exact copy of the first sentence.
- The summary includes every minor detail from the text.
- The summary accurately reflects the author's overall message and purpose. (Correct answer)
- The summary introduces new information not found in the text.
Correct answer: The summary accurately reflects the author's overall message and purpose.
A successful summary based on the main idea will capture the essence of what the author is trying to communicate without getting bogged down in minor details. It should be a concise restatement of the central point. Copying sentences or adding outside information shows a misunderstanding of the task.
