  1. A Navy recruiter must sign 18 enlistments in a 30-day month. By day 20 she has signed 13. How many enlistments per day must she average for the remaining 10 days?

    Answer: 0.5 per day

    Remaining enlistments = 18 - 13 = 5; remaining days = 10; rate = 5 / 10 = 0.5 per day.

  2. A ship's mess serves 480 meals daily: 60% breakfast, 25% lunch, and the rest dinner. How many dinner meals are served each day?

    Answer: 72

    Dinner percentage = 100% - 60% - 25% = 15%; dinner meals = 0.15 x 480 = 72.

  3. Two ships leave the same port simultaneously, one heading north at 22 knots and one heading south at 18 knots. How far apart are they after 5 hours?

    Answer: 200 nautical miles

    Northbound ship = 22 x 5 = 110 nm; southbound ship = 18 x 5 = 90 nm; total separation = 200 nm.

  4. A project requires 6 officers working 8 hours per day for 10 days. If 2 officers are reassigned, how many hours per day must the remaining 4 work to finish on time?

    Answer: 12 hours

    Total work = 6 x 8 x 10 = 480 officer-hours; hours per day = 480 / (4 x 10) = 12 hours.

  5. A base hospital has 120 beds; 78 are occupied. If 12 more patients are admitted and 5 are discharged, what percentage of beds are then occupied?

    Answer: 70.8%

    New occupied = 78 + 12 - 5 = 85; percentage = (85 / 120) x 100 = 70.8%.

  6. A convoy of 8 trucks must deliver 3,200 supply boxes. Each truck can carry 48 boxes per trip. How many complete trips will the entire convoy need to make to deliver all boxes?

    Answer: 9 trips

    Boxes per trip (whole convoy) = 8 x 48 = 384 boxes; trips = 3,200 / 384 = 8.33, so 9 complete trips are needed.

  7. An officer invests $8,000 at a 5% annual simple interest rate. How much interest will the investment earn in 3 years?

    Answer: $1,200

    Simple interest = Principal x Rate x Time = $8,000 x 0.05 x 3 = $1,200.
