OAA Test-Taking Strategies & Academic Skills Flashcards

Which study technique is MOST effective for long-term retention before the OAA?

Answer: Spaced practice — reviewing material over several days

Spaced practice distributes study sessions over time, which strengthens memory and improves long-term retention.

On the OAA, what does the word 'compare' in a question mean?

Answer: Identify both similarities AND differences

'Compare' typically means to examine both what things have in common and how they differ.

How can making a quick outline help on OAA written response questions?

Answer: It organizes your thoughts so your response is clear and complete

A brief outline helps organize ideas logically before writing, resulting in a more focused and complete response.

Which action should you take when you finish the OAA test early?

Answer: Review your answers for errors or incomplete responses

Using extra time to review catches careless errors, incomplete answers, or skipped questions that can cost points.

What is the best way to handle test anxiety before and during the OAA?

Answer: Use deep breathing, positive self-talk, and focus on one question at a time

Managing anxiety through breathing and positive self-talk keeps you calm and focused, improving test performance.

On OAA reading passages, what is the purpose of identifying the author's purpose?

Answer: To understand why the text was written — to inform, persuade, or entertain

Understanding the author's purpose helps you interpret the text's tone, structure, and the type of evidence used.
