NRA Maintenance Protocols 5

Question 1

Which type of ammunition requires especially prompt cleaning due to corrosive priming?

Accepted Answer

Older military surplus ammunition with corrosive primers

Answer

Corrosive primers leave salts that attract moisture and rapidly rust the bore unless neutralized and cleaned soon after firing.

Question 2

What is the generally recommended method to remove salts left by corrosive primers?

Accepted Answer

Water-based cleaning followed by thorough drying and oiling

Answer

The salts are water-soluble, so water-based cleaning followed by drying and oiling is needed to remove them.

Question 3

How often should a firearm in long-term storage be inspected?

Accepted Answer

Periodically, to check for rust and renew protection

Answer

Stored firearms should be checked periodically because protective coatings can degrade and humidity can change.

Question 4

An instructor notices a cracked stock on a student's rifle during maintenance. What is the correct action?

Accepted Answer

Take the firearm out of service until a qualified gunsmith inspects it

Answer

Structural damage can be dangerous, so the firearm should not be used until a qualified gunsmith evaluates it.

Question 5

Why should eye protection be worn while cleaning firearms?

Accepted Answer

Springs, solvent, and debris can strike the eyes
