NRA Maintenance Protocols 3

Question 1

Why is adequate ventilation emphasized when using gun cleaning solvents?

Accepted Answer

Solvent fumes can be harmful when inhaled

Answer

Many solvents release vapors that are hazardous to breathe, so cleaning should be done in a well-ventilated area.

Question 2

A shotgun was used on a rainy hunting day. What maintenance step is most important that evening?

Accepted Answer

Dry it thoroughly and apply a light protective oil

Answer

Moisture left on metal causes rust quickly, so drying and applying a protective film should be done promptly.

Question 3

Which item helps confirm that a firearm's chamber is empty during maintenance?

Accepted Answer

A bore light or visual and physical inspection of the chamber

Answer

Visually and physically inspecting the chamber, with a light if needed, confirms it is unloaded.

Question 4

Why is a cleaning rod made of coated steel, brass, or carbon fiber preferred over a bare segmented aluminum rod?

Accepted Answer

It is less likely to embed grit and wear the bore

Answer

Soft or segmented rods can pick up abrasive grit and scratch the bore, while one-piece coated or harder rods reduce wear.

Question 5

What is the main risk of storing a firearm long-term inside a fabric or foam-lined case?

Accepted Answer

The case may trap moisture and promote rust

Answer

Padded cases can hold humidity against metal, so they are meant for transport rather than long-term storage.
