2026 is NOCTI's 60th anniversary. The institute traces its start to a 1966 consortium of 23 states, was incorporated in 1969, launched student tests in 1980, and has held ISO/IEC 17024 (ICAC) accreditation since 2015. (source)

Assessment Format at a Glance

A NOCTI Job Ready credential has two components that a school can order together or separately. The written (knowledge-based) component is multiple-choice, delivered online through QuadNet™ or on paper in a proctored room, and runs roughly 2 to 3 hours with about 90 to 200 questions; the exact count and time vary by assessment blueprint (for example 124 questions in 2 h 30 for Accounting, 195 questions in 3 hours for Administrative Assisting) and may be split over one, two or three sessions. The performance (skill-based) component is a set of real job tasks, typically 4 to 7 jobs in 2 to 3.5 hours, scored by a third-party industry evaluator. Foundational and Employability Skills credentials are written only. Scores are reported by standard against a criterion-referenced cut score and state/national averages; a 70% score triggers a College Credit Recommendation Report. How many questions are on a NOCTI test?: It depends on the blueprint. Current examples: 90 questions (Accounting Foundations), 115 (Additive Manufacturing Essentials), 124 (Accounting), 144 (21st Century Skills), 195 (Administrative Assisting) and 200 (Pennsylvania Automotive Mechanics Technology). Performance tests typically contain 4 to 7 jobs.
How long do NOCTI exams take?: Written components are scheduled for 2 to 3 hours depending on the blueprint (for example 2 h 30 for the 124-question Accounting test, 3 hours for 195-question Administrative Assisting) and may be administered in one, two or three sessions. Performance components run about 2 to 3.5 hours (for example 7 jobs in 3 h 30 for Accounting).
Is the NOCTI exam computer-based or paper?: Both are offered. Most credentials are delivered online through QuadNet™, NOCTI’s own proctored testing system (built-in calculator, enlargeable graphics, text-to-speech and extended-time accommodations, immediate results); a paper/pencil format is also available and the school chooses the method.

How do I register for a NOCTI exam?: Testing is ordered through your school or college’s NOCTI account, so start with your CTE instructor or administrator. Study guides and direct orders when no school account exists go through NOCTI at nocti@nocti.org or 231-796-4890.
Where can I take a NOCTI test?: At your school, career center or college testing site under a proctor; all assessments must be administered in a proctored environment unless the blueprint states otherwise. Teacher tests are given at NOCTI’s nationwide Area Test Centers.
What ID do I need for NOCTI testing?: You'll need a valid photo ID (student ID, driver's license, or state ID). Your testing center may have additional requirements, so confirm beforehand.
Can I choose when to take my NOCTI exam?: Test dates are set by your school or testing site, which schedules sessions through QuadNet™. Post-tests are typically given near the end of a program; pre-tests may be given at the start. There is no public national test calendar.

Each standardized credential’s report shows a criterion-referenced cut score (minimally competent level) and state/national averages, and your state or school sets how results count.
