How NOCTI Exams Are Scored
NOCTI uses a criterion-referenced scoring model with 4 performance levels. Understanding how scoring works helps you set a realistic preparation target.
Advanced: Demonstrates comprehensive mastery of the occupational content — typically the top 20–25% of scorers. Employers and colleges often seek Advanced-level candidates. Some states attach scholarships or college credit to Advanced scores.
Competent: Demonstrates sufficient knowledge and skills for entry-level employment in the occupation. This is the passing threshold and the score most students and programs target. Raw score requirements for Competent vary by exam but are typically 55–70% of written items correct, plus satisfactory performance on performance tasks.
Developing: Demonstrates partial mastery — some content areas are solid, others need development. This is a borderline result. Students scoring Developing may be eligible for retesting depending on their program's policy.
Pre-Competent: Demonstrates limited knowledge of the occupational content. Significant additional instruction is recommended before retesting.
