✍️ Sample NFSI Questions & Answers
1. You discover that a piece of equipment at your station has not been properly maintained and may be unreliable. You should:
✓ Remove the equipment from service and report it to your supervisor immediately
Removing unsafe equipment from service immediately prevents use in an emergency where failure could be fatal.
2. Thermal imaging cameras cost $3,500 each. If a department buys 4 cameras and receives a 10% bulk discount, what is the total cost?
✓ $12,600
4 × $3,500 = $14,000; 10% discount = $1,400; $14,000 − $1,400 = $12,600.
3. A rope runs over a single fixed pulley attached to a ceiling. A firefighter pulls down with 80 pounds of force. The load being lifted weighs approximately:
✓ 80 lbs
A single fixed pulley changes the direction of force but provides no mechanical advantage, so the lifted load equals the applied force of 80 pounds.
4. A station has 4 firefighters on duty and each must complete 3 equipment checks per shift. How many total checks are completed across a 5-day work week?
✓ 60
4 × 3 × 5 = 60 total checks.
5. During training, a recruit correctly answers 84 of 120 questions. What is the recruit's score as a percentage?
✓ 70%
84 ÷ 120 = 0.70 = 70%.
6. If 4 firefighters can complete a search of a floor in 12 minutes, how long would the same search take with 6 firefighters (assuming equal work distribution)?
✓ 8 minutes
Total work = 4 × 12 = 48 person-minutes; 48 ÷ 6 = 8 minutes.
