What Is the National Benchmark Test (NBT)?

The National Benchmark Test (NBT) is a standardised assessment developed by the National Benchmark Tests Project (NBTP), administered through the Centre for Educational Testing for Access and Placement (CETAP) at the University of Cape Town. First introduced in 2005 by Universities South Africa (then HESA), the NBT measures your academic readiness for university-level studies in South Africa.

NBT Exam 2025: What to Expect

NBT Content Breakdown

📚 Academic Literacy (AL)

Tests your ability to understand academic vocabulary, identify main ideas, evaluate evidence, track arguments in texts, and interpret visual information like tables and charts.

📊 Quantitative Literacy (QL)

Assesses your ability to interpret graphs and statistics, perform multi-step calculations, identify patterns, and apply basic mathematical concepts in real-world contexts.

🎯 Mathematics (MAT)

Covers algebra, functions, trigonometry, calculus basics, and geometry. Required for programmes in engineering, commerce, science, and health sciences.

🧠 Critical Thinking

Evaluated throughout all sections, testing your ability to reason logically, make inferences, evaluate arguments, and draw conclusions from complex information.

How to Register for the NBT in 2025

Go to nbt.ac.za and click on "Book a Test" to begin the registration process. You'll need your South African ID number or passport details.

Select from available test dates between May and October. Choose a venue that's convenient for you—tests are held at universities and schools across South Africa.

Pay R185 for AQL only or R370 for AQL + MAT via EasyPay at Pick n Pay, Shoprite, Checkers, or Spar, or pay online through the EasyPay website.

Bring your ID, registration letter, proof of payment, two HB pencils, eraser, and sharpener. Arrive by 07:30 for registration—doors close at 08:30.

Access your NBT results online approximately 2-4 weeks after testing using your NBT reference number or South African ID number.

Important: If you miss your scheduled test date, you must re-register and pay again. Your scores will only be released once payment is confirmed. The NBT Project does not endorse any paid preparation courses.

Your NBT scores are categorised into three benchmark levels that indicate your academic readiness for university study. These levels help universities make decisions about admission and placement into support programmes.

Well-prepared for university study. Academic progress unlikely to be limited by abilities in this domain.

📈 Intermediate

May face some challenges. Additional academic support may be beneficial during studies.

📚 Basic

May be underprepared. Extensive support or foundation programme placement may be required.
