The National Assessment of Educational Progress — better known as the Nation's Report Card — measures what students across the United States know and can do in reading, mathematics, science, writing, and other subjects. Released NAEP items give students, teachers, and test-prep professionals a reliable window into the types of questions that appear on the actual assessment. This free NAEP practice test PDF compiles those released items into a printable format you can use in the classroom, at a tutoring session, or for independent study at grades 4, 8, and 12.

Whether you are a student preparing for a state NAEP administration, a teacher designing benchmark assessments aligned to NAEP frameworks, or a researcher studying achievement levels, this PDF organizes questions by subject and grade band. Print it, work through each item set, and use the answer explanations to understand why certain responses meet the Proficient or Advanced achievement level threshold.

What NAEP Assessments Cover

NAEP frameworks define what students are expected to know at each grade level and guide the construction of every item on the assessment. Understanding the content domains and cognitive demands within each subject helps students and educators target study time effectively.

Reading: Literary and Informational Texts

NAEP reading questions ask students to locate and recall information, integrate and interpret ideas, and critique and evaluate what they read. Literary texts include fiction, poetry, and literary nonfiction, while informational texts cover procedural documents, persuasive writing, and expository passages. Grade 4 items focus heavily on literal comprehension, while grades 8 and 12 require students to synthesize across multiple passages and evaluate author craft and argument.

Mathematics: Five Content Areas

The NAEP mathematics framework organizes questions into number properties and operations, measurement, geometry, data analysis and probability, and algebra. At grade 4, number operations and measurement make up the largest share of points. By grade 12, algebra and functions carry significantly more weight. Both calculator and non-calculator sections appear, and constructed-response items require students to show work and explain reasoning.

Science: Physical, Life, and Earth Sciences

NAEP science items are grounded in three broad content areas: physical science (matter, energy, forces and motion), life science (ecosystems, heredity, biological evolution), and earth and space science (earth structure, weather, and the solar system). The framework also emphasizes science practices — designing investigations, analyzing data, and constructing explanations — alongside content knowledge.

Achievement Levels and Scale Scores

NAEP reports results on a scale of 0 to 500 for reading and mathematics. Achievement level cut scores define Basic, Proficient, and Advanced performance. Proficient represents solid academic performance and competency in challenging subject matter. The National Achievement Level Results show what percentage of students nationally and by state reach each threshold, making NAEP the primary yardstick for comparing educational progress across states over time.
