MoCA Visuospatial Abilities

Question 1

Which two drawing tasks in the MoCA assess visuospatial abilities?

Accepted Answer

Cube copy and clock drawing

Answer

The MoCA visuospatial section includes a three-dimensional cube copy task and a clock drawing task, both of which require spatial processing and constructional ability.

Question 2

On the MoCA cube copy task, what features must the copied cube demonstrate to earn 1 point?

Accepted Answer

It must be three-dimensional with parallel lines of approximately equal length

Answer

The cube copy earns 1 point if it is three-dimensional, has all parallel lines roughly parallel, and all sides are roughly equal in proportion. A flat two-dimensional square does not receive credit.

Question 3

Which domain does the clock drawing fall under on the MoCA form?

Accepted Answer

Visuospatial/Executive

Answer

Clock drawing is categorized under the Visuospatial/Executive domain on the MoCA because it requires both spatial construction and executive planning.

Question 4

What does poor performance on the MoCA cube copy task most directly indicate?

Accepted Answer

Visuoconstructional impairment, suggesting parietal lobe dysfunction

Answer

Difficulty reproducing the three-dimensional cube reflects visuoconstructional impairment, often associated with parietal lobe dysfunction, and is seen in Alzheimer's disease, Lewy body dementia, and cortical posterior disorders.

Question 5

A patient copies the cube but draws it as a flat square with lines attached. This copy earns:

Accepted Answer

0 points — the copy is not three-dimensional

Answer

A flat two-dimensional representation of a cube does not meet the requirement for a three-dimensional copy. It scores 0 on the cube copy task.
