MoCA Practice Test: Video 1 Answers (25 Questions)

Question 1

In the context of MoCA administration, what cognitive domain does the Clock Drawing task primarily assess?

Accepted Answer

Visuospatial and executive function

Answer

Clock Drawing probes visuospatial ability (constructing the circle and numbers) and executive function (planning hand placement).

Question 2

A patient draws all 12 numbers but places them all on the right side of the clock face. Which scoring criterion is affected?

Accepted Answer

Numbers only

Answer

Crowding all numbers to one side violates the approximate correct position requirement for the numbers criterion.

Question 3

What maximum score can a patient earn on the MoCA Clock Drawing subtest?

Accepted Answer

3

Answer

The Clock Drawing subtest on the MoCA is worth a total of 3 points: contour, numbers, and hands.

Question 4

Which cognitive process is most taxed when a patient must translate the verbal time '11:10' into correct hand positions on the drawn clock?

Accepted Answer

Abstract conceptual transformation and spatial planning

Answer

Converting a spoken time into spatial hand positions requires abstract conceptual processing (understanding clock conventions) and executive planning.

Question 5

The MoCA manual states that the clock contour must be drawn 'without assistance.' What does this mean operationally?

Accepted Answer

The patient must draw freehand without a compass or template

Answer

The patient must draw the clock circle freehand; using a template, tracing, or compass would invalidate the constructional component of the task.
