Master of Financial Economics

This postgraduate degree prepares you to understand the underlying economics behind financial market phenomena such as mergers and acquisitions, stock market fluctuations and economic risk. The curriculum focuses on empirical and statistical testing of economic theory, econometrics, and mathematical modelling. It also includes the application of these models to solve real world problems such as option pricing, value at risk and yield curve modeling.

The curriculum differs by university, but in general, it focuses on both theoretical and applied research. Its theoretical component teaches students about macro-economic theory and micro-economic theory. It also covers topics like monetary economics and public economics. Its applied research component focuses on the use of econometric techniques to analyse the structure and performance of financial markets, with courses such as econometrics for finance and financial time series.

The program is taught entirely in English. Students who successfully complete the MEcon will be well-equipped to work in international organizations or in government, non-profit and management sectors of Japan or their home countries. They will also be able to advance to PhD studies.
