Trigonometry is the backbone of surveying calculations. Horizontal Control: Traverse Calculations

Closed and open traverse calculations are a major exam focus. You must be able to convert between bearings and azimuths, compute latitudes and departures (latitude = distance × cos(bearing), departure = distance × sin(bearing)), calculate closure error and precision ratio, apply the compass (Bowditch) rule for distributing closure error, and compute final coordinate values for each traverse station. Vertical Control: Differential Leveling

Differential leveling questions require computing foresight and backsight readings, calculating height of instrument (HI), determining bench mark elevations, and identifying allowable closure errors. Rod reading interpolation and digital level operation are also tested.

The PLSS (Public Land Survey System) section tests township and range descriptions, section numbering (1–36 within a township), and aliquot part descriptions. Metes and bounds descriptions require understanding calls for course (bearing + distance), calls for monuments, and calls for adjoiner. Legal principles include senior vs. junior rights (older deed controls over newer), adverse possession elements, and easement types (express, implied, prescriptive). Riparian rights for water boundaries are also tested.

Map Projections and Coordinate Systems

Candidates must understand the difference between NAD83 and NAD27 datums, UTM zone structure and coordinate format, and state plane coordinate system zones. Conversion between geographic coordinates (latitude/longitude) and grid coordinates appears on the exam. Photogrammetry basics — flight line overlap requirements (60% forward, 30% side lap), scale of a vertical photograph (f/H where f = focal length, H = flying height above datum), and stereoscopic viewing — round out this section.

Surveying Equipment and Technology
