The typical minimum education requirement to become a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) is a Bachelor's degree. While some states may accept an Associate's degree with extensive experience, or prefer a Master's degree, a Bachelor's is generally the foundational academic credential. This degree is usually in a relevant field such as psychology, social work, or counseling, and is often combined with supervised clinical experience and specific coursework.

Client confidentiality is a cornerstone of ethical practice for LADCs, fostering trust and encouraging clients to share sensitive information. Counselors are legally and ethically bound to protect client information, only disclosing it with the client's explicit written consent. The only exceptions are specific legal mandates, such as reporting child abuse, elder abuse, or imminent danger to self or others, which are designed to protect vulnerable individuals and public safety.
