Korn Ferry Assessment Situational Judgment Questions and Answers — Questions and Answers
Question 1: You are leading a project team meeting to finalize a proposal. During the discussion, two senior members engage in a heated, public disagreement over the core strategy, causing the meeting to stall and other members to become visibly uncomfortable. What is the most effective immediate action to take?
- A. Ask the two disagreeing members to leave the room until they can reach a compromise on their own.
- B. Acknowledge the validity of both perspectives, park the contentious topic for a separate, smaller discussion, and redirect the team to other agenda items. (Correct answer)
- C. Immediately take a vote to let the majority of the team decide which strategy to pursue.
- D. End the meeting and schedule individual follow-ups with every team member to get their private opinions before you make the final decision yourself.
Correct answer: B. Acknowledge the validity of both perspectives, park the contentious topic for a separate, smaller discussion, and redirect the team to other agenda items.
The most effective action is to de-escalate the conflict while maintaining meeting productivity. Acknowledging both viewpoints respects the individuals, tabling the specific issue allows for a more focused resolution later, and redirecting the team ensures the meeting's time isn't wasted. This approach demonstrates strong facilitation, conflict management, and situational adaptability.
Question 2: A key client is upset about a recent service disruption and has sent an angry email to you and your manager. The disruption was caused by another department, but your team is the primary point of contact. Which of the following is the most effective initial response?
- A. Reply only to your manager, explaining that it was not your team's fault and that the other department is responsible.
- B. Wait for your manager to respond first, as they are senior.
- C. Reply all to the client and your manager, immediately blaming the responsible department to ensure the client knows where the fault lies.
- D. Reply all, acknowledging the client's frustration, apologizing for the impact of the disruption, and assuring them you are investigating the root cause to provide a comprehensive update. (Correct answer)
Correct answer: D. Reply all, acknowledging the client's frustration, apologizing for the impact of the disruption, and assuring them you are investigating the root cause to provide a comprehensive update.
This response demonstrates customer focus, ownership, and accountability, even when the fault lies elsewhere. By acknowledging the client's frustration and taking immediate ownership of the investigation, you begin to repair the client relationship. Blaming others internally or waiting passively is less effective and can appear unprofessional.
Question 3: You have been assigned to lead a high-priority initiative, but the project has an extremely tight budget that seems unrealistic. Which of the following actions would be the LEAST effective approach?
- A. Proceed with the project as planned and hope you can find cost savings along the way, without raising concerns to your sponsor. (Correct answer)
- B. Meet with your project sponsor to present a risk analysis and propose a revised scope or timeline that aligns with the budget.
- C. Collaborate with the team to brainstorm innovative, low-cost solutions to meet the project goals within the given constraints.
- D. Analyze the budget in detail to identify exactly where the shortfalls are and prepare data-driven options for leadership to consider.
Correct answer: A. Proceed with the project as planned and hope you can find cost savings along the way, without raising concerns to your sponsor.
Ignoring a significant, known risk like an unrealistic budget is the least effective and most irresponsible action. It fails to manage expectations, demonstrates a lack of business insight, and sets the project and team up for failure. All other options are proactive, professional ways to address the challenge.
Question 4: You notice a junior colleague is consistently struggling with a new software platform that is essential for their role. They seem hesitant to ask for help, and it is starting to impact their quality of work. What is the most constructive way to intervene?
- A. Inform their direct manager about the performance issue so it can be handled formally.
- B. Publicly offer to host a general training session for anyone struggling with the new software during the next team meeting.
- C. Privately and informally approach the colleague, mention that you also found the software tricky at first, and offer to share a few tips. (Correct answer)
- D. Do nothing and wait for them to ask for help, allowing them to maintain their sense of autonomy.
Correct answer: C. Privately and informally approach the colleague, mention that you also found the software tricky at first, and offer to share a few tips.
This approach is the most effective because it is supportive, non-threatening, and preserves the colleague's dignity. By approaching them privately and sharing your own experience, you build psychological safety and make it easy for them to accept help. This fosters collaboration and develops others without resorting to formal escalation or passive inaction.
Question 5: Your manager gives you critical feedback on a major presentation, highlighting several areas for improvement. You had worked very hard on it and felt confident in the result. What is the most effective reaction in the moment?
- A. Immediately start explaining and defending your choices to show that you had valid reasons for your approach.
- B. Listen carefully, thank your manager for the feedback, and ask clarifying questions to ensure you fully understand their points. (Correct answer)
- C. Apologize for the presentation's shortcomings and promise to do a complete overhaul immediately.
- D. Remain silent and nod, then later vent your frustrations about the feedback to a trusted peer.
Correct answer: B. Listen carefully, thank your manager for the feedback, and ask clarifying questions to ensure you fully understand their points.
This response demonstrates a high degree of self-awareness and nimble learning. Instead of becoming defensive, you treat the feedback as a learning opportunity. Asking clarifying questions ensures you can make targeted, effective improvements and shows that you value your manager's perspective, strengthening the working relationship.
Question 6: Your team has just successfully completed a difficult, six-month project. However, another department that was supposed to take over the next phase is significantly delayed, putting the overall product launch at risk. What is the most appropriate first step?
- A. Escalate the issue to senior leadership immediately, highlighting the other department's failure to meet their deadline.
- B. Send an email to the other department's lead, formally documenting their delay and requesting a new timeline.
- C. Schedule a meeting with the lead from the other department to understand their challenges and collaboratively explore how your team might be able to help. (Correct answer)
- D. Inform your team that the project is on hold indefinitely and instruct them to move on to other tasks.
Correct answer: C. Schedule a meeting with the lead from the other department to understand their challenges and collaboratively explore how your team might be able to help.
The most effective first step is to approach the situation collaboratively. By seeking to understand the other team's challenges, you demonstrate partnership and a focus on the shared objective (the product launch). This approach is more likely to yield a positive solution and maintain cross-functional relationships than immediate escalation or formal, potentially adversarial, communication.
