Korn Ferry Assessment Drivers and Motivations Questions and Answers — Questions and Answers
Question 1: Within the Korn Ferry Four Dimensions of Leadership and Talent (KF4D) model, which dimension focuses on an individual's values, motivations, and career aspirations?
- Competencies
- Experiences
- Drivers (Correct answer)
- Traits
Correct answer: Drivers
The 'Drivers' dimension in the KF4D model is specifically concerned with what energizes and motivates a person, including their core values and long-term career interests. Competencies relate to skills, Experiences relate to one's professional history, and Traits are ingrained personality characteristics.
Question 2: A manager is assessing a team member for a high-potential program. The employee has a strong track record of performance (Experiences) and is highly skilled (Competencies). However, the manager is unsure if the employee is genuinely energized by the prospect of leading people and taking on increased responsibility. Which KF4D dimension should the manager focus on to gain clarity?
- Traits
- Drivers (Correct answer)
- Derailment Risks
- Learning Agility
Correct answer: Drivers
This scenario directly addresses the employee's underlying motivations and what they find rewarding, which is the core of the 'Drivers' dimension. While Traits, Derailment Risks, and Learning Agility are important for leadership potential, the question specifically points to the employee's motivation and energy for a leadership path.
Question 3: Which of the following best describes the primary purpose of assessing 'Drivers' in the Korn Ferry framework?
- To evaluate a candidate's past job performance and project successes.
- To measure a candidate's observable skills and behaviors against a success profile.
- To understand a candidate's natural behavioral tendencies and personality.
- To determine the alignment between a candidate's personal motivations and the organizational culture and role requirements. (Correct answer)
Correct answer: To determine the alignment between a candidate's personal motivations and the organizational culture and role requirements.
Assessing 'Drivers' is crucial for understanding person-organization fit. It helps predict engagement, satisfaction, and commitment by seeing if what motivates an individual aligns with the rewards, opportunities, and values of the organization and the specific role.
Question 4: According to the Korn Ferry model, 'Drivers' and 'Traits' are dimensions that primarily describe:
- What a person does.
- Who a person is. (Correct answer)
- How a person learns.
- Where a person has been.
Correct answer: Who a person is.
The Korn Ferry framework categorizes 'Drivers' (motivations, values) and 'Traits' (enduring personality characteristics) as dimensions that describe 'who a person is' at a fundamental level. In contrast, 'Competencies' and 'Experiences' describe 'what a person does' or has done.
Question 5: An employee consistently expresses a desire for more autonomy, challenging projects, and opportunities to influence strategy. In the context of Korn Ferry's 'Drivers', this individual is likely motivated by:
- Stability and Security
- Affiliation and Belonging
- Power and Independence (Correct answer)
- Altruism and Service
Correct answer: Power and Independence
The employee's expressed desires for autonomy (independence), influence (power), and challenge align directly with the 'Power' and 'Independence' categories of drivers identified in Korn Ferry's assessment literature. These motivations are distinct from needs for security, social connection, or helping others.
Question 6: When using the Korn Ferry assessment for leadership development, understanding an individual's 'Drivers' is critical primarily because it helps to:
- Identify specific skills that need to be trained.
- Pinpoint past experiences that are relevant for a future role.
- Ensure development plans are motivating and align with the individual's core values. (Correct answer)
- Assess the individual's cognitive capacity for complex problem-solving.
Correct answer: Ensure development plans are motivating and align with the individual's core values.
A development plan is most effective when the individual is motivated to pursue it. Understanding a person's Drivers allows organizations to tailor development opportunities (e.g., projects, roles, rewards) in a way that energizes the employee and aligns with their intrinsic values, increasing the likelihood of success and engagement.
