Journeyman Electrician’s Exam Journeyman Electrician's Lighting and Luminaires 1 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: According to NEC 410.16(C), which type of luminaire is PROHIBITED in clothes closets?
- Recessed incandescent with a completely enclosed lamp
- Recessed LED luminaire
- Surface-mounted incandescent luminaire (Correct answer)
- Surface-mounted fluorescent luminaire with a completely enclosed lamp
Correct answer: Surface-mounted incandescent luminaire
NEC 410.16(C) prohibits surface-mounted incandescent luminaires in clothes closets because the exposed heated lamp surface poses a fire hazard near stored clothing and textiles.
Question 2: What minimum clearance must be maintained between a surface-mounted fluorescent luminaire and the nearest point of a clothes closet storage space?
- 6 inches
- 12 inches (Correct answer)
- 18 inches
- 24 inches
Correct answer: 12 inches
NEC 410.16(C)(2) requires surface-mounted fluorescent luminaires in clothes closets to maintain a minimum 12-inch clearance from the defined storage space to reduce fire risk.
Question 3: A luminaire installed where it will be directly exposed to rain must be listed for:
- Damp locations with a weatherproof cover
- Wet locations (Correct answer)
- Any outdoor use
- Damp locations if mounted under an eave
Correct answer: Wet locations
NEC 410.10(A) requires that luminaires exposed to weather or rain be listed specifically for wet locations and constructed so that water cannot enter or accumulate in electrical components.
Question 4: The maximum wattage lamp installed in a luminaire must not exceed:
- 150 watts for standard incandescent applications
- The wattage marked on the luminaire (Correct answer)
- 100 watts unless the circuit ampacity permits more
- The wattage of the original lamp installed during manufacture
Correct answer: The wattage marked on the luminaire
NEC 410.130(A) requires that lamps used in a luminaire shall not exceed the maximum wattage marked on the luminaire, as determined by the listing process.
Question 5: Thermal insulation must not be installed within _____ of the recessed part of a luminaire that is NOT rated for insulation contact (non-IC rated).
- 1/2 inch
- 1 inch
- 3 inches (Correct answer)
- 6 inches
Correct answer: 3 inches
NEC 410.116(A)(2) prohibits thermal insulation from being installed within 3 inches of the recessed portion of a non-IC rated luminaire to prevent dangerous heat accumulation and potential fire.
Question 6: For load calculation purposes, each 2-foot (600 mm) section of lighting track shall be considered a load of:
- 100 volt-amperes
- 150 volt-amperes (Correct answer)
- 180 volt-amperes
- 200 volt-amperes
Correct answer: 150 volt-amperes
NEC 410.151(B) specifies that each 2-foot section of lighting track or fraction thereof shall be considered a load of 150 volt-amperes when calculating circuit load.
Question 7: Luminaires installed in the zone measuring 3 feet horizontally and 8 feet vertically from the top of a bathtub rim must be listed for:
- Damp locations only, with GFCI protection required
- Wet locations, or damp locations in enclosed tub or shower spaces (Correct answer)
- Wet locations without exception
- Any location if the branch circuit has GFCI protection
Correct answer: Wet locations, or damp locations in enclosed tub or shower spaces
NEC 410.10(D) permits luminaires listed for damp locations in enclosed bathtub or shower spaces within the defined zone, while requiring wet location listing for non-enclosed installations.
