Journeyman Electrician’s Exam Journeyman Electrician's Conduit Bending 2 — Questions and Answers
Question 1: In a 3-point saddle bend, what angle is used for the CENTER bend?
- 22.5 degrees
- 30 degrees
- 45 degrees (Correct answer)
- 60 degrees
Correct answer: 45 degrees
A 3-point saddle uses a 45-degree center bend and two outer bends of 22.5 degrees each to clear an obstruction.
Question 2: In a 3-point saddle bend, what angle are the two OUTER bends set to?
- 10 degrees
- 15 degrees
- 22.5 degrees (Correct answer)
- 45 degrees
Correct answer: 22.5 degrees
The outer bends in a 3-point saddle are 22.5 degrees each, which is half the 45-degree center bend.
Question 3: What multiplier is used when calculating the distance between bend marks for a 22.5-degree offset?
- 1.414
- 2.000
- 2.613 (Correct answer)
- 3.000
Correct answer: 2.613
A 22.5-degree offset uses a multiplier of 2.613 because 1 divided by sin(22.5 degrees) = approximately 2.613.
Question 4: A conduit needs a 6-inch offset using 22.5-degree bends. What is the distance between the two bend marks?
- 8.48 inches
- 12.00 inches
- 15.68 inches (Correct answer)
- 18.00 inches
Correct answer: 15.68 inches
Distance = 6 x 2.613 = 15.68 inches between the two bend marks.
Question 5: What is "developed length" in conduit bending?
- The length of the conduit after bending is complete
- The total conduit length required for a run, including all straight sections and bend arc lengths (Correct answer)
- The horizontal distance from one bend mark to another
- The inside radius of a finished bend
Correct answer: The total conduit length required for a run, including all straight sections and bend arc lengths
Developed length is the total conduit material required for a run, accounting for every straight section plus the arc length through each bend.
Question 6: When making back-to-back 90-degree bends for a U-shape with a desired INSIDE measurement of 12 inches, how far from the heel of the first 90 is the second bend mark placed?
- 6 inches
- 12 inches (Correct answer)
- 17 inches
- 22 inches
Correct answer: 12 inches
For back-to-back bends, the second mark is placed at the desired inside measurement (12 inches) measured from the heel of the first completed 90-degree bend.
Question 7: Per NEC Chapter 9 Table 2 (referenced by Section 344.24), what is the minimum field-bend radius for 1/2" Rigid Metal Conduit (RMC)?
- 2 inches
- 4 inches (Correct answer)
- 5 inches
- 6 inches
Correct answer: 4 inches
NEC Chapter 9 Table 2 requires a minimum 4-inch bend radius for 1/2" RMC to prevent damage and internal diameter reduction.
