  1. A room is 10 feet by 12 feet. Flooring tiles are sold in boxes that cover 20 square feet each. How many boxes are needed?

    Answer: 6 boxes

    Room area = 10 × 12 = 120 sq ft; 120 ÷ 20 = 6 boxes.

  2. A customer needs to paint a wall that is 9 feet tall and 15 feet wide. One quart of paint covers 100 square feet. How many quarts are needed for one coat?

    Answer: 2 quarts

    Wall area = 9 × 15 = 135 sq ft; 135 ÷ 100 = 1.35, so 2 quarts are needed.

  3. Concrete mix bags each fill 0.6 cubic feet. A customer needs to fill a rectangular hole that is 2 feet deep, 1 foot wide, and 1.5 feet long. How many bags are needed?

    Answer: 5 bags

    Volume = 2 × 1 × 1.5 = 3 cubic feet; 3 ÷ 0.6 = 5 bags.

  4. A fence is 120 feet long and fence posts are placed every 8 feet. How many posts are needed in total, including both end posts?

    Answer: 16 posts

    120 ÷ 8 = 15 gaps between posts; 15 gaps require 16 posts (one at each end of each gap).

  5. A customer wants to lay sod in a yard that is 30 feet by 40 feet. Sod rolls cover 9 square feet each. How many rolls are needed?

    Answer: 134 rolls

    Yard area = 30 × 40 = 1,200 sq ft; 1,200 ÷ 9 = 133.3, rounded up to 134 rolls.

  6. A customer is installing wall studs every 16 inches along a 12-foot wall. How many studs are needed in total, including both end studs?

    Answer: 10 studs

    12 feet = 144 inches; 144 ÷ 16 = 9 spaces, requiring 9 + 1 = 10 studs.

  7. A customer needs mulch for a garden bed that is 15 feet long, 4 feet wide, and 3 inches deep. Each bag of mulch covers 1.5 cubic feet. How many bags are needed?

    Answer: 10 bags

    Volume = 15 × 4 × (3/12) = 15 × 4 × 0.25 = 15 cubic feet; 15 ÷ 1.5 = 10 bags.
